Canada was a Christian country: The basis of Canadian Christian nationalism
Canada was founded as a Christian country and continued as a Christian country for most of its history. Canada as we know it was established as a colony of Britain. Because Britain was a formally Christian country during the time it settled Canada, it was only natural that many of Britain’s Christian characteristics were incorporated into Canada right from the beginning.
Canada’s Christian nature was clearly on display during the parliamentary debates about the Lord’s Day Act in 1906.

Alberta Independence is Necessary Because Alberta Cannot Solve Its Problems Within Canada
Any credible alternatives for solving Alberta’s problems within Canada have failed. For example, trying to get a Triple-E Senate was unsuccessful despite the open support of the Alberta government, the Reform Party of Canada, and later, Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
Clearly, the failure of these efforts shows that we can’t solve our problems within Canada. Only independence can solve the problems by putting Albertans in control of their own destiny. A referendum on independence is the necessary step to ensure a prosperous and free future.

The Case for Alberta Independence – An Historical Perspective by Michael Wagner
Over the last several decades, there have been a number of proposals by influential people about how to improve Alberta’s situation within Canada. None of their recommendations could be implemented due to opposition from Central Canada. The West has tried to fix Canada, but it doesn’t want to be fixed. Therefore, the only remaining alternative is for Alberta to become independent.

Christian Influence in Twentieth Century Alberta by Michael Wagner
From 1935 until 1968, Alberta had two premiers who were radio evangelists. They governed the province and also preached on a very popular gospel radio program once per week.
William Aberhart – who was popularly known as “Bible Bill” – became premier in 1935 and remained in office until he died in 1943. His successor was Ernest Manning who remained premier until he resigned in 1968.
Manning would subsequently be named to the Canadian Senate to represent Alberta, where he remained until 1983.
This Zoom presentation was made to ChristianRoots Canada www.christianrootscanada.org on August 25, 2023.

Pierre Trudeau ruined Canada – the case for Alberta independence by Michael Wagner
Canada has been one of the freest and most prosperous countries in history. But Canada is not the country it once was. There have been momentous changes in recent decades, and it’s much harder to be proud of Canada now than before.
The main person responsible for Canada’s decline is Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. He did many things to ruin Canada, with two of the most important being his attack on Alberta in the 1970s and early 1980s, and his destructive changes to Canada’s constitution in 1982. Property rights were deliberately omitted from the Charter.
This talk was presented on June 17, 2023 in Bowden, Alberta.

Canada Cannot be Fixed – Alberta Must Become Independent by Michael Wagner
Over the last several decades, there have been many proposals by influential people about how to improve Alberta’s situation within Canada. None of their recommendations were implemented.
Most significant, of course, was the Reform Party of Canada. Alberta voted overwhelmingly for the Reform Party during the 1990s, but Canada’s political system could not be fixed.
And that's the bottom line: If Preston Manning and the Reform Party could not get a Triple E Senate and otherwise reform Canada’s political system, then it can’t be done. The West has tried to fix Canada, but it doesn’t want to be fixed. Therefore, the only remaining alternative is for Alberta to get out.
There is no other option.

“Bible Bill” Aberhart, Ernest Manning, and Christian Influence in Alberta Politics - Michael Wagner
During the decades of the mid twentieth century, conservative Christians played a large role in Alberta politics. In fact, Alberta had premiers who were outspoken evangelical Christians. There were two premiers from 1935 to 1968, and both of them were radio evangelists at the same time as they were premiers: William “Bible Bill” Aberhart and Ernest Manning.
This talk was given the evening of July 30, 2022 in Edmonton, Alberta.

True Right: Genuine Conservative Leaders of Western Canada
https://merchantship.ca/products/true-right?_pos=5&_sid=c37d7c0fd&_ss=r Canadian conservatives need to know about the past heroes of their movement. They also need to know about the thought leaders who inspired many to understand and act upon the principles that conservatism represents. Out west, at least, many Canadians have favoured limited government, free enterprise and traditional morality going back many decades. This is the perspective of genuine conservatism. And it is a heritage that needs to be understood and embraced as the ideological foundation of true Canadian conservatism for current and future generations.
A central purpose of this book is to highlight western Canadian conservative leaders, their perspectives and accomplishments, as a basis for encouraging and inspiring Westerners to embrace this legacy of genuine conservatism. As well, a basic outline of “Byfield conservatism” is sketched, followed by a more detailed consideration of the political thought of Link and Ted Byfield. Byfield conservatism is a true and indigenous Canadian conservatism. It is this form of conservatism that will need to thrive if Canada (or at least Western Canada) is to be rescued from its current destructive course.

Is Conservative Christian Political Activism in Canada an American Import?
Some people believe that conservative Christian political activism in Canada is a result of American influence. In this view, the American Christian Right is essentially exerting itself into Canada. However, to try to undermine the legitimacy of conservative Christian activism in Canada by pointing to American influence ignores the even greater American influence on socially left-wing movements in Canada. The political movements that constitute the social Left in Canada (abortion rights, feminism, homosexual activism, etc.) largely had their origins in the United States and are inspired by American leaders and ideas.
In this brief video, Rev. David MacKenzie of the Evangelical Office of the Public Square asks Michael Wagner about this issue.

Did Evangelicals Become Involved in Politics to Take Over the Government?
Some people believe that the wave of conservative Christian political activism that has occurred in recent decades arose out of a desire to “take over” the government. However, it is clear from history that the conservative Christian political activism that emerged beginning in the 1970s was largely defensive in nature. Conservative Christians were responding to political changes initiated by the Left that were rightfully perceived as undermining the Christian moral basis of society.
In this video, Rev. David MacKenzie of the Evangelical Office of the Public Square asks Michael Wagner about this issue.

Standing on Guard for Thee: The Past, Present, and Future of Canada's Christian Right
https://merchantship.ca/products/standing-on-guard-for-thee?_pos=1&_sid=6e260a793&_ss=r Christianity has always supported the right-to-life of unborn children and the healthiest family form known to mankind, i.e., monogamous heterosexual marriage. Canadian Christians have actively defended these positions since they first came under attack during the regime of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.
Standing on Guard for Thee: The Past, Present and Future of Canada's Christian Right provides a history of conservative Christian activism in English-speaking Canada from the early 1970s through to the legalization of same-sex marriage in 2005. It highlights the roles played by the three key conservative Christian thought-leaders and activists in Canada: Rev. Ken Campbell of Renaissance Canada, Gwen Landolt of REAL Women of Canada, and Ted Byfield of Alberta Report magazine. It also discusses other groups such as Canada Family Action Coalition (CFAC) which was founded by Brian Rushfeldt and Roy Beyer. This heavily-documented book provides much information about conservative Christian activism in Canada that is difficult to find anywhere else.

The History of Alberta Separatism - Alberta: Separatism Then and Now
https://merchantship.ca/products/alberta-separatism-then-and-now?_pos=4&_sid=6e260a793&_ss=r The Alberta separatist movement began in the early 1970s largely in response to the harmful policies of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. It was Trudeau’s socialistic attempts to control Alberta’s oil resources that ultimately inspired the separatist movement. Thus, it is easy to characterize Pierre Trudeau as the father of Alberta separatism.
This book, Alberta: Separatism Then and Now, provides an historical account of the origin of Alberta separatism, and its glory years in the early 1980s. The main organizations involved included the Independent Alberta Association (IAA), Elmer Knutson’s West-Fed, and the Western Canada Concept (WCC). In February 1982, an Alberta WCC candidate, Gordon Kesler, won a byelection to become the first western separatist candidate elected to a legislature.
The Alberta separatist movement of the 1980s would ultimately be subsumed by the Reform Party of Canada. Later, with Stephen Harper as prime minister, most Albertans were satisfied with the federal government. However, after Harper’s election loss, it was only a matter of time before a new prime minister would seek political advantage at Alberta’s expense.

Why Alberta must separate from Canada – No Other Option: Self-Determination for Alberta

On the one hand, it can remain within Canada and have major decisions about its economic future and well-being decided by politicians elected somewhere else - in Central Canada. Or, it can choose a path of self-determination whereby all decisions about its future are made by Albertans themselves. As history clearly demonstrates, the first option comes with negative economic consequences from policies designed to cater to voters in places like Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal. Only the second option - the one recommended in this book - offers Albertans an opportunity to choose what's best for Alberta.

Leaving God Behind: The Charter of Rights and Canada’s Official Rejection of Christianity
https://merchantship.ca/products/leaving-god-behind?_pos=2&_sid=c37d7c0fd&_ss=r In 1985, federal Justice Minister John Crosbie explained that Canada was being fundamentally altered as a result of the adoption of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. He said, “The public does not realize that we already have had a revolution in Canadian society. The adoption of a charter was a revolution. It has changed the whole power structure of Canadian society.”
Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau did not like Canada the way it was, and he set out to make it into a different kind of country. In short, the Charter of Rights was intended to fundamentally change Canada, and it has done that.
The book Leaving God Behind: The Charter of Rights and Canada’s Official Rejection of Christianity explains that Canada was originally based on a generally Christian foundation, but that was drastically changed with the adoption of the Charter of Rights.
