Dangerous Linux Kernel?

TTT 28-1: Debian <3 Proprietary Firmware?

Well, not really, but in a departure from 25 years of being staunchly Libre, even being considered the leading proponent of GNU/Linux, the Debian Community has decided to amend their social contract and adopt proprietary WiFi firmware as a part of Debian 12 “Bookworm” which should be out sometime next year. Maybe this pragmatic move will encourage more Ubuntu users who are tired of Canonical’s walled garden, but still love the rest of what Debian has to offer, to move over as it will be easier to install now. Who knows? Time will tell.

Take a breath today. That’s right, you. No matter what noise is happening in your life, you need to know this. If you get still, and become present, you will sense Him at work. He is still the same God who inspired David to write this 3000 years ago. You can still count on Him, even when the shrieking around you is loudest and most shrill. Rest in that. Now.

TTT 28-2: Linux Kernel 6 Has Now Been Released

Here’s what’s new/ different from 5.19:
support for
Aarch64 (ARM64) huge memory pages without splitting
NVME in-band authentication
PCI buses in OpenRISC and LoongArch
More goodies for RISCV
Lots of other stuff that likely won’t affect most of us any time soon, but is cool that it is now in the Linux kernel…

TTT 28-3: Beware the 5.19.12 Kernel If You Have an Intel Laptop

There is a bug in this kernel that can destroy your display panel, as it causes power sequencing delays that can damage, if not kill your LED panel, and it can cause white flashes to appear on screen. If you have this kernel (basically if you are running an Arch or Fedora distro, make sure that you update the kernel ASAP to 5.19.13, or if you don’t need the bleeding edge driver support for something, consider reverting to the LTS kernel, which is based on the 5.15 series now. If the updated kernel is not available to you yet, revert to the 5.15 LTS kernel.
