Bioenergetic exercises are great for changing and upgrading our lives, however, this course it is not suitable for everyone. There are two areas you need to check on before getting into this course and beginning the series of exercises.
1. Mental Health
If you've ever been diagnosed with a psychiatric condition, then you need to check in with a suitably qualified person before beginning these exercises. If you have specifically been diagnosed with one of the following conditions, then you will certainly be excluded from doing these exercises on your own: history of psychotic episodes, schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, and related conditions usually treated with heavy, suppressive medications.
If you currently are taking any form of inhibitory or mood altering-medication or have a history of injecting drug use, then you need to get medical advice prior to beginning these exercises. If you have a serious emotional or personality problem, do not attempt these exercises alone because they may lead to feelings that are more than you can handle alone. Here as mentioned earlier, it is necessary to get some professional advice.
To be clear, you need to have a relatively normal ego to practice Bioenergetic exercises without expert supervision. People not on medication but experiencing an emotional difficulty or even a “low level” mental health condition may find these bioenergetic exercises beneficial, yet it must be done prudently. If at any time you are threatened or overwhelmed by your feelings during an exercise, stop the exercises immediately, allow the feeling to subside, and seek professional help.
2. Physical Health
If you have any physical disability or illness, you should consult your physician before undertaking any program of exercises, including this one. The exercises by themselves are in no way dangerous or harmful to the body even in the case of illness, but for physical disability or illness, they should be done with the approval and guidance of a medical doctor.
Even though these exercises are not nearly as physically damaging as most gym workouts, you still need to be aware of any injuries or physical conditions you have had in the past. If this is true in your case, understand each exercise before starting, go slow, and ensure that you won't be over stressing a part of your body that you have had issues with in the past. Our bodies are constantly in motion, exhibiting vibrations through breathing, heartbeats, eye movement, tremors, and occasional twitching. These vibrations indicate the state of our neuromuscular system. "Gross" vibrations suggest tension, while releasing tension leads to "finer" vibrations.
Bioenergetic postures stress muscles, inducing natural vibrations. The objective is to sustain these vibrations during stress, increasing the body's tolerance for excitement. Vibrations (shaking) in our body are caused by an energetic charge in our neuromuscular system and are like the vibration occurring in an electrical wire when a current passes through it. Analogous to measuring the degree of voltage in a wire, the degree of vibration in a person’s body tells us what shape it is in.
In a body, “gross” vibrations (large and sporadic vibrations) are a sign that the excitation (or charge) is not freely flowing. Just like rapids in a river let us know that rocks are impeding the smoothness of the course, so too do these gross vibrations (shaking) show us that the current of excitation is flowing through spastic muscles that are most likely in a state of chronic tension (Neurotic Holding Patterns). When the tensions are released or the muscles relax, these vibrations become “finer,” hardly perceptible on the surface and we can even experience them as a delightful purr.
To test what shape our body is in, the postures in bioenergetics put muscles, or muscle groups, under a degree of controlled, intelligent stress. This will lead certain muscles in our bodies to naturally shake. Through these vibrations, we will be releasing neurotic holding patterns and begin to feel muscles in our bodies that have become “dead zones.” Focusing on feeling our bodies during the vibrations and breathing deeply as learned in the last module will increase the level of vital energy in our system, thereby supporting the release to go deeper.
Our objective during these stressful exercises is to keep these natural vibrations going even as the excitement (charge) builds, and the stress increases. To accomplish this, our egos need to be unafraid to go with our body’s involuntary responses. In time, we will be increasing our body's tolerance for excitation and pleasure while noticing that the vibrations are becoming finer. The result will be that we are no longer bound by chronic muscular holding patterns and their corresponding psychological/emotional manifestations will be experienced less and less. This will result in bodily movements and behavior that have a high degree of spontaneity and yet are coordinated and effective, demonstrating a high quality of natural grace.
In his book “The Way to Vibrant Health,” Alexander Lowen states that “One can only achieve grace by increasing the motility of the body, then infusing it with self-awareness to yield a high degree of self-possession. The mark of a graceful and gracious person is his self-possession.” This means that through performing these vibratory exercises, we will also develop the corresponding psychological attitude of being gracious. This is achieved through an internal feeling of unity and integrity that leads to what Lowen calls “self-possession.” Through this state of being, we will begin to behave with a natural sincerity in thought and action, which is very graceful and attractive.

We can define grounding simply as “the feeling of having contact between our feet and the ground,” but there is so much more to it. The theory is that when we are well grounded, our bodies, the energy flowing through our bodies, and our minds are all affected in positive ways.
I will attempt here to separate the benefits of being grounded based on physical, psychological, and energetic benefits. However, let us remember that all these components are so intertwined within us, that positive effects in one aspect, always impact the others as well.

Physical Benefits of Being Grounded
Physically, we are grounded when we have our feet firmly planted on the ground and hold our weight evenly on our feet. Being physically balanced allows for calmness and ease when we’re standing in place. Additionally, being grounded gives opportunity for effortless and masterful movements when our body is in motion.
Even though we stand and walk on our feet, this doesn’t mean that we are necessarily centered on our feet. For many reasons, it seems that many of us are centered in the upper half of our bodies, mainly in our heads: the focus point of our ego, consciousness, and deliberate behavior. This is no surprise as the upper half of our body gives us many gifts and abilities such as thinking, speaking, and logical decision-making. The issue, however, is that many times we can become stuck there and forget the importance of the lower half of our bodies which also has many gifts to offer.
This ends up being unresourceful because the lower parts of our bodies are associated with the realm of the unconscious and instinctual life, which are also vital to our well-being. Many traumas are associated with the lower half of our bodies being that it is more animal-like in its functions, including sexuality and locomotion. By increasing our balanced and firm contact with the ground, we will notice that our movements are allowed to flow freely, and when they do, we are gifted with the qualities of rhythm and grace, something that the upper half of our bodies cannot give us.
Energetic Benefits of Being Grounded
If you go online and look up “grounding” on a search engine, you may discover that many people have discovered the benefits of both “grounding” and “earthing.” They mention that having contact with the earth allows the flow of electrons to discharge into the ground and it is very beneficial for our health.
These articles focus on the contact between our feet and the earth and explain how the “electrical current” discharges to the ground. In Bioenergetics, however, we will take a step back and focus on our body’s internal ability to fully discharge to the ground. This denotes a flow of excitation (charge) through our legs, into our feet, and then to the ground. Through our exercises, we will ensure that our bodily charge can flow freely and fully discharge to the ground when necessary. The difference is like water flowing through a hose vs. a fire hydrant.
Psychological Benefits of Being Grounded
The Psychological benefits of grounding are vast! Initially, being grounded gives us a sense of being calm and secure because we “know where we stand” and therefore, “we know who we are.” This means that we are not “up in the air,” living in a fantasy world that we create in our minds. We are in the here and now, right where we stand.
In being grounded, despite a sense of intense excitation, elation, or charge, we remain calm because we discharge this energy downward, instead of letting it rise into our minds. When not grounded, an increase in excitation causes us to “fly off” into our minds and try to resolve this charge mentally, which just ends up being a form of mental masturbation, causing anxiety, feelings of danger, and fears of falling and failing. This is only resolved when we refocus ourselves back onto safe ground, both physically and emotionally.

Bioenergetic Therapy does not concentrate heavily on “breathing exercises,” however being conscious of breathing during all the exercises is crucial for allowing us to both sense and release tensions that have been preventing us from breathing naturally.

As adults, we tend to have disturbed breathing patterns due to muscular tensions that we hold in our bodies. These tensions affect our ability to breathe gracefully and are generally the result of emotional conflicts and trauma experienced during our lives. It is now beginning to be better understood that what happens to us during these traumatic moments affects us both psychologically and physically; sadly, most therapists are still trained to be only preoccupied with the mind and never even mention the body.
From my experience, breathing exercises help somewhat, but they do little or nothing to actually address the muscular tensions which are the culprit in disturbing our ability to breathe naturally. And this is what makes Bioenergetic Therapy so unique! In Bioenergetics, a primary focus is specifically on releasing “neurotic holding patterns” which is a fancy way of saying chronic muscular tensions which have been introduced to our bodies during traumatic moments in our past and have yet to be released.
3 keys to breathing during Bioenergetic Exercises
1. Horizontal Breathing (0:57)
In order to support our physical and psychological health, it is best for us to “breathe horizontally.” This is the correct way to inhale and exhale whether you're practicing bioenergetics or not, so feel free to practice this throughout the day. At first, you may find it to be awkward and that’s okay.
2. Open Mouth Breathing (5:55)
Bioenergetics is radically different than other bodywork or meditative practices. Instead of trying to calm down our body and mind, we are trying to charge it with energy, such that any old, stuck charge can come to the surface and be released or integrated.
3. Making Sounds (7:36)
Making sounds that resonate in our bodies during the exercises will cause inner vibrations which will help us in releasing the constrictions we may have in our throats causing us to breathe more deeply and easily. Simultaneously, we will also be learning to be psychologically okay with speaking up, being heard, and making noise. This will certainly allow us to express ourselves more freely in our day-to-day interactions.

Bioenergetic exercises are great for changing and upgrading our lives, however, this course it is not suitable for everyone. There are two areas you need to check on before getting into this course and beginning the series of exercises.
1. Mental Health
If you've ever been diagnosed with a psychiatric condition, then you need to check in with a suitably qualified person before beginning these exercises. If you have specifically been diagnosed with one of the following conditions, then you will certainly be excluded from doing these exercises on your own: history of psychotic episodes, schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, and related conditions usually treated with heavy, suppressive medications.
If you currently are taking any form of inhibitory or mood altering-medication or have a history of injecting drug use, then you need to get medical advice prior to beginning these exercises. If you have a serious emotional or personality problem, do not attempt these exercises alone because they may lead to feelings that are more than you can handle alone. Here as mentioned earlier, it is necessary to get some professional advice.
To be clear, you need to have a relatively normal ego to practice Bioenergetic exercises without expert supervision. People not on medication but experiencing an emotional difficulty or even a “low level” mental health condition may find these bioenergetic exercises beneficial, yet it must be done prudently. If at any time you are threatened or overwhelmed by your feelings during an exercise, stop the exercises immediately, allow the feeling to subside, and seek professional help.
2. Physical Health
If you have any physical disability or illness, you should consult your physician before undertaking any program of exercises, including this one. The exercises by themselves are in no way dangerous or harmful to the body even in the case of illness, but for physical disability or illness, they should be done with the approval and guidance of a medical doctor.
Even though these exercises are not nearly as physically damaging as most gym workouts, you still need to be aware of any injuries or physical conditions you have had in the past. If this is true in your case, understand each exercise before starting, go slow, and ensure that you won't be over stressing a part of your body that you have had issues with in the past.
