how much does it cost to build a website for a small business

As I'm sure you can imagine, estimating the costs to build your business website is going to be a bit tricky. Businesses of course come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, so getting an exact estimate for your costs is tough.

So what I'll do here is use the example of a business website that's taking credit card orders and selling physical products. In other words, an e-commerce site.

I understand that not all businesses are going to sell physical products online, but this'll give us a kind of high watermark -- we're using one of the more involved online business models (e-commerce) as our gauge here.

Of course if you have a simpler business, your numbers are going to be much lower because you'll have fewer needs. And, I'm assuming that you're building your website yourself and not hiring an expensive agency or freelance designer. This will cut your costs by a huge, huge amount.

Now, to reach the estimate that I've arrived at, I've factored in all components you'd need...everything from your domain name, web hosting, payment processor...I've even made estimates for things your SSL certificate and even allowances for website add-ons and plugins.

If you want to see this complete breakdown, I'll leave a link to a post where I detail out everything, item by item. In the meantime, the grand total that I've arrived at as an estimate to build your small business website (again, an e-commerce website) is $1,370...give or take.

This is a far, far cry from the $10,000 or even the $5,000 that it would cost you to hire someone to build your business website for you. Still, even $1,370 could be giving you a bit of sticker shock.

The good news is that these costs to build your business website yourself are just an estimate and could be much lower. Further, over time, as you continue running your online business, your costs continue to decrease.

The most expensive part is your initial set up. And once that's out of the way, you can run your online business very affordably.
