how to build an audience for your business
One of the hardest things to do in online business is to build an audience around the work you care about and that fulfills you. I'm a big, big music fan so for whatever reason, I often relate online business, and online marketing, and audience building to bands.
Bands are actually a great parallel and a great metaphor for online businesses...whether you're selling home decor online, t-shirts, fine art, online courses, coaching of some kind or a membership of some sort...or even your own music.
So let's look at a few bands. Bands like Pearl Jam, Phish, and The Grateful Dead were able to build massive, loyal, audiences around the products they sold -- namely concert tickets, CDs, and merch. Meanwhile though, other bands couldn't build an audience...or said another way, the didn't keep at it long enough.
One of my favourite bands of all time is a little known all-girl rock band called The Donnas. If you like 70s and 80s style straight up rock 'n roll', check out their last three records...they're awesome and their guitarist absolutely shreds!
And sadly, being unable to build a big enough audience, being unable to continue developing themselves lyrically and stylistically...the wheels fell off and the band fell apart.
And there's a lesson here for us online business owners and creators: The hardest thing in business is to build an audience around our work. But with enough effort over a long enough period of time, all your audience-building efforts hit a threshold and everything explodes and your efforts suddenly multiply.
And if you can hang in long enough...if you don't quit early before the magic has had a chance to kick in...then your efforts multiply and the audience begins building itself. This is because your most die hard fans become your biggest advocates.
Really, they become your marketing department. Once you cross this threshold, you can take your foot off the gas a bit and turn your efforts to serving and taking care of your core audience on an even deeper level than you were before.
After you have an audience that knows, likes, and trusts you, it's now simply a matter of continuing to offer them things that they're excited to buy...whether that's concert tickets, your latest CD, a paid membership, a really great online course...or whatever else you've created for them.
