MakuluLinux – Revisited

Intro to TF.pro

DM 26-1: RedoxOS Gets Huge Anonymous Donation

Remember me talking about Redox a while back? It is a Linux distro being developed by the lead developer for Pop!OS. The unique thing about it is that it is entirely written in the Rust programming language. The project just received a $390k anonymous donation, making things easier for the developer to make it even better. I would characterize it as a curiousity at this point, though Linus Torvalds says that we will see Rust in the Kernel starting in kernel 6.1. Until then, this is an interesting project to watch, but not necessarily a great daily driver for most.

Honest Abe said it… preparation is 2/3 of the battle, if you have ill-suited or dull tools for the task at hand, switch them out or sharpen them so that the job is easier in the end. Work smarter, not necessarily harder. Do not waste effort. Be wise. Use your mind, not just your head.

DM 26-2: EuroLinux brings RHEL to the Desktop

What is RHEL again? RHEL is Red Hat Enterprise Linux, this is the fully supported, paid option for servers and other enterprise solutions put forth by the company related to Fedora. RHEL is downstream from Fedora, from what I recall, and is stable, where Fedora is essentially rolling. Fedora is community based, where RHEL is fully supported by Red Hat. Why would you want this on the desktop? Well, let’s think about it… an ultra stable distro, with full corporate support might be an excellent fit for a company who wants a very secure and stable production environment for their workers, or for education, as an alternative to ChromeOS. This is where EuroLinux fits into the picture. It is GNOME based, but has a familiar translucent bottom panel to make it feel a little more familiar. It also has a 10-year support cycle for the kernel and OS level software.

DM 26-3: More on MakuluLinux

I talked about MakuluLinux a couple of months ago, and was somewhat unimpressed, unfortunately. It has some great ideas baked in, but unfortunately is based on GNOME which is what it is. I have no interest in ragging on it again, though I have plenty I could say, lol. Their SHIFT flavor bakes in a host of extensions (about 50) to make it look like 8-10 different pre-made, themed layouts that can look like anything from classic Windows to Unity style, to a more standard GNOME, to KDE-alike, and several in between. They also have a Gamer Edition, which comes with Steam, GameHub, Lutris, PlayOnLinux, Heroic, GeForce Now, and RetroArch baked in, along with a driver manager, but only one layout. It is Ubuntu based, so that makes it more stable, but leaves you open to the issues inherent to Canonical-derived projects. If you like what you see in the review below, check it out.
