Francis Barker M-73 Compass, around the fake Witches Stone Halloween fun
Since I could only found a handful of infos on YouTube around the most famous Francis Barker M-73 prismatic marching compass, I thought it may come handy to do a close-up video on my own legendary M-73 compass you may or may not have seen in some of my hiking videos and have been wondering what that is for a start.
For a start get you a head's spin, start with a pint or two of Hobgoblin Ale, get into the spirit the stronger, the better ;-)

Yeah, the Francis Barker M-73 has a long heritage going back to 1822, started with a MK1 model being used by the British Army during WW1, with several improvements and changes since then, made it's high-days with the famous most iconic MK-III used during WW2 by the Brits (this one later became the most cheaply copied knock off in the world, so carefully if you're looking for an original F.Barker compass there are many fakes around and usually easy to spot) the latest model, the M73 can be found here, still in production and brand new with a high price tag made by:

all these are well worth having a read to get some more background infos around this wonderful instrument.

Water treatment Katadyn filter video-compilation – beginners Directors-cut edition
Well, since all my descriptions and recommendations about the importance of water treatment and how to get clean water on the trail or out in the woods are spread over several videos over time. I thought it maybe would make sense to pull this water issue infos together in a compact and one video for better understanding of the matter.
At the same time, I take the opportunity to show you a bit of my backstage production or home studio production of some sorts... Yeah, I'm still learning, so forgive me the many flaws.
Hope you enjoy this “beginners Directors cut” anyway ;-)

Mountaineers kit – Baschlik Mütze Loden wool hunting hat and Gramlich Alpine Hazel Bergstock
Right, today I'm getting back to my promises of showing and talking about my trusty hiking companion, namely a Bergstock or Alpine-stick as an essential piece of kit and what it is used for. These sticks are made from natural grown Hazelnut bushes.
Additional, because we are talking about the traditional Alpine Loden gear and the mountaineer's field hat, which matching perfectly together with the other wool Loden clothing and Rucksack I'm using.
All this equipment got a long history in traditional Alpine countries like around Austria, Germany, Swiss, and yes Sweden and Finland too, all places where it is essential to be best prepared against unpredictable cold, wet and harsh weather conditions for the last few hundred years, and still is very common in use among Huntsman, Bushcraft, Hiking and Outdoor folks alike who has to rely on their kit if out there, exposed to the elements.

DIY Dyneema double strand multi usable UL-cord ridge-line – getting itchy feet Bohusleden trail
Since I'm at my privet nomadic style Basecamp (others would call it their cosy home) and have sorted out my Rucksack and kit again over the last few weeks, it looks like I'm getting itchy feet once more, planing the next trip to Sweden this time.
From a last hiking trip 4 years ago I still have this CALAZO Tyvek maps in 1:25k of Sweden which cover the Bohusleden's trail along the west coast https://www.westswedentrails.com/en/delled/bohusleden of Sweden, so why not doing that one..
Have been there before a few years ago and did a small section of it already, so it would be nice to continue to explore more of it on my next trip to come.
Additionally, I reorganized my pack a bit by dumping some gear I haven't used in Finland last time, making room in the Rucksack reducing the amount of items to carry, and yeah adding new kit as well.
By doing so I use the opportunity to replace a chunky Dyneema rope with a DIY double strand thin cord that can be used as washing line, ridge-line or just as a multi usable cord to hang up anything off the ground.

After thought to my homecoming from Finland hike – Casström Lars Fält Knife - K720 vs Sleipner steel
Yeah home again, getting everything tided up for the next trip or just everything back in to order in generally with my kit, which worked out very well and I'm not going to alter anything, may just trough some unused stuff out.
But well the main thing is that I wanted to tell you a bit more of my afterthoughts, specially regarding the Casström Lars Fält knife, since I found out or rather remembered some technical details I forgot to mention on the trip.
It's because there are two sorts of steel available for the Lars Fält knife that serving different needs for Bushcraft, the blade marked up with “K720 steel” containing a higher grade of carbon steel, so this is better for thronging sparks working with a magnesium rod much better, while the 2nd does tend to rust lesser or not as easy, containing more chrome and makes the steel slightly harder for heavy work.
So make your mind up what you gonna be use your knife for, if you want to get yourself one of the very useable and bushcraft dedicated Casström Lars Fält knife's, this info should make you aware of the differences to look out for of the two types of steel this knife is available from dealers or shops, because they tend not to know nor care about the properties these two blades can give you for different needs.
https://www.casstrom.com/
https://www.casstrom.com/materials.html
Stated on the Casström web-page:
About K720 steel:
Böhler Tool Steel K720 is a very tough and strong oil hardened high carbon tool steel. The chemical composition allows it to be hardened to a high degree whilst maintaining ductility and toughness at the same time, as it is easy to sharpen and can obtain a razor sharp edge. Whilst easy to sharpen, the low chromium content means it will tarnish if left wet, and it must therefore be wiped after use and protected by oil or wax when put away for storage.
Composition: C. 0.9%, Si. 0.25%, Mn. 2.0%, Cr. 0.35% V. 0.1% (HRC 58-60)
About Sleipner steel:
Sleipner steel allows the knife to keep a sharp edge very well, for longer and also during very hard use without chipping to the extent that is often seen in stainless and high-alloy steels. The chemical composition allows high temperature tempering to a high hardness with retained ductility (ability to deform without breakage) and toughness, while still being relatively easy to sharpen and capable of obtaining a very sharp and durable edge. Due to the 8% chromium content, it will resist corrosion to some degree compared to regular carbon steel (around 0.5% Cr) but not as well as stainless steel (13% Cr). Therefore, the blade should be dried after use and protected with oil or wax when stored in a high humidity environment.
Sleipner steel belongs to the 8% Cr die steel category and was developed to have toughness close to simple tool steels like O2 and A2 but with much higher wear resistance, closer to D2.
Composition: C 0.9% Si 0.9% Mn 0.5% Cr 7.8% Mo 2.5% V 0.5% (~HRC 60)

Custom made woolly Anorak from Hubertus Loden – unboxing of my newly tailored LoPu
Yeah the waiting is over, had placed an order for a 2nd woolly LoPu-Anorak from Hubertus Loden GmbH a few weeks ago, right after I came back from my hiking trip to Finland.
Since I'm still very convinced about the many benefits the German made 100% woolly Loden material does offer for the outdoors in general, my new customised tailored LoPu arrived in the post today with a few more felt items like a spare seat felt and a “Dogy-bed” in form of a larger felt pad in size 60x80cm meant to be a lair for hunting dogs in the field to lay down in comfort, but will suits me as sleeping pad in the Hammock and on hard ground instead.
While I was using my trusty old LoPu on the trip around Finland, I noticed that I definitely wanted a slightly tuned version of it, like the same model but with longer sleeves and a longer back side.
Due to the flexibility of the Hubertus team, they were able to supply me with a customised and hand made new LoPu Anorak to my specs or rather requests to suits my body shape much better than the standard one, with great success.

Ohh you are “ONE OF THEM” one of the weird once who dares to hang out in Finland's endless woods
Yeah it's a funny world between the millennium generation and the once that are grown up in pre-smartphone times, ages ago in the past, long forgotten these days, “ONE-OF-THEM” who actually can do without all that high-tech and feeling good about it, even seams to find it normal to stay in the woods for more than a few hours at the time, unthinkable that it could be possible even for weeks to cope there in the wild... there is nothing other than just woods and well nothing... what could you possibly find there other than boredom, aren't you scared being swallowed by bears and wolves out there or worth ?... yeah that would be one of the more educated question these days, but far away from reality....
Well yeah I'm “ONE-OF-THEM” thank you very much. Thanks for asking, yeah I can do just fine without issues, strangely enough I'm capable to enjoy it a lot so nothing wrong with that ;-P
Well that was a encounter with a young 23-year-old Girl who did some translation with a ticket counter in a Kiosk at Hämeenlinna Train station in Finland for me, who thought I would be one of the lost and frail elderly who wouldn't cope in this modern times any more, or at least having a hard time to cope on a overnight train to Rovaniemi in Lapland, cramped in to a single seat all night long. (do I really look that old, out of time ??)... and yeah anyway I'm “ONE-OF-THEM” out of time who can cope nicely, even in my age like 60+ and yes a warm soft train seat is luxury compare sleeping on wooden planks in a open shelter out in the woods with temperatures dropping to 6-degree at 4am and no I haven't been lost either, unless for the modern world lifestyle ;-)
Anyway I made a stop at the hostel "Cafe Koti" in Rovaniemi Lapland, which is located in the centre of town, easy assessable walk around town and nightlife if needed for pleasure and resupply.
OK this is the last Video from my three weeks Finland trip out into the woods but not the end of things to come, just for now... but again getting slowly ready for the next trip for sure ;-)

Fresh green all over, lake view with DIY Plash-Palatka as windbraker setup in Lavvu shelter Loppi
And yep my DIY canvas Plasch-Platka 2x2m Poncho-Tarp proofed itself once more, became very useful again in a open wooden Lavvu shelter hut "Pipopääkivi" at the lake Kivijärvi, Melkuttimet, Loppi area, still on the Hämeen Ilvesreitti, Häme Lynx Trail, with a nice view over the lake but the wind, smoke and rain blowing right in to the shelter too, so the Plash-Palatka actually made it bearable to be shed of the harsh weather condition, so I could stay dry in a way.
At the same time it could resist sparks and smoke from the fire blowing right in to it, cooking a meal in the rain, but the sausages were nice.
As a little surprise I had a large green dragonfly as a visitor just sitting there for a while.
As a little recommendation, there is a Bus stop about 7-8Km walk further east at the road crossing in "Hannumäki" going north to "Porras" which actually got a larger central Buss station to get out of the woods, but be aware that this bus only going three times the day like 8am in the morning, in the afternoon at 15:40 and the last one in the evening at around 8pm....

Shelter hut lake Iso-Melkutin Finland, Khukuri and Lars Fält Knife maintenance with Ballistol oil
Staying at a very large and classic double semi-open Scandinavian shelter "Tokholmannakka" (east-side of the lake) right next to the crystal clear lake Iso-Melkutin with a lot of firewood to be used to keep warm and dry since it started raining again, nevertheless this is one of the best maintained shelter I came across so far and is located right on the Hämeen Ilvesreitti, Häme Lynx hiking Trail.
Made extensively use of the highly maintained and well-equipped Shelter infrastructure, having nice and tasty steaks at breakfast, lunch and tea in the afternoon in flat finish buns.
Using the opportunity for maintenances my chopping blades, namely the Nepali Khukuri and the Swedish Casström Lars Fält Bushcraft Knife with Ballistol oil, to keep this carbon steel rust free and just in generally in good order, explaining a bit about this valuable tools and why I'm using this too.
Beside telling a bit more on the water-filter and what I do carry in my pack against bad stomach or just loos guts, diarrhoea and what does help to tackle this problem to cure on a trail.
Other than packing up again my woolly DIY rucksack and carry to move on hiking, even if I didn't really wanted to go, still on the Lynx Trail Finland to the next shelter on my way.

Multi option DIY 3x3m Canvas Tarp and Tarp-tent setup Anthill style ideal for Bushcraft needs
This gonna be a longer video with multiple setup styles, making use of my 3x3m DIY canvas Tarp which is quite lightweight and is being used as a large Tarp over a DD-Hommock in the rain and as a “Anthill” shape Tarp-tent fashion setup on a quiet camping side too, which gives me many more options for easy overnight stay under different conditions.
Showing some very individual details not found on any modern standard Nylon tarp, that instead allows for a large amount of setup option with my DIY canvas tarp to be used.
Staying at the hidden and slightly forgotten Ilpola resort and Campsite at the lake Kuitikkaanlahti not far from the Hämeen Ilvesreitti, Häme Lynx Trail but a nice treat for a change.
In between the setups like using classic Tarp and the Tarp-Tent Anthill style, I follow the "Poron Polku" Loppi trail, which going parts wise together with the Häme Lynx Trail.
The material I'm using came from: Tschum canvas Bushcraft tents and stove... the maker of the famous and unique “Tschum 2P SOSWA Bushcraft tent”

Shopping day, remote but oldest shop in Finland, impressive shelter with pristine clear lake water
Made my way through the woods to the last of the oldest remote grocery village shop in Finland about 3-4Km east of the lake Iso-Melkutin near the air field, for stocking up with food and good moods, sweets and a warm welcome on the spot, which is obviously guarded by a very special totem ghost of the woods spooking around on the fence with a big smile across his face ;-)
With a bit of a short review on why I'm still happy with my woolly DIY Rucksack and why I prefer it over modern kit.
Ended up at an impressive shelter hut next to the lake Iso-Melkutin with pristine clear water, lots of fire wood to spare too, a place to stay for some time.
Live just can't get any better.

Rainy day – DIY Plash-Palatka real-world test on the Lynx Trail Finland, more infos on Wetterfleck
So far the Plash-Palatka became a very useful item to be used as small tarp to cover my DD-Hammock over several nights as small Bushcraft shelter, but it had to start raining eventually too, on my hike along the Hämeen Ilvesreitti, Häme Lynx Trail in Finland where I found cover in a BBQ shelter for a few days, but had to move on nevertheless anyway regardless of the wet conditions.
So my DIY Plash-Palatka had to prove itself for reliability for me in wet condition as well, to keep it as a permanent piece of kit in my Rucksack.
By walking fully loaded with my woolly DIY Loden Rucksack for 12mils in constant rain this Plash-Palatka actually did a very good job and yes it's proved to be worth to keep it, I'm very happy that I had this slightly underestimated piece of highly mobile 2x2m shelter Poncho-Tarp with me, to keep me and my pack fairly dry hiking for the next cover out of the rain and missable.
Follow the "Poron Polku" Loppi trail along at some sections, which going parts wise together with the Häme Lynx Trail before getting to the next shelter on my way.
Additionally, there are some more review details and infos about the Hubertus-Loden woolly Wetterfleck which I forgot to mention in my previous video explaining what a Wetterfleck actual is and where it is used for..
Furthermore, my Khukuri became very handy for chopping larger logs to make a fire to dry my kit off more easily, a short demonstration on how to use the Khukuri.

Hogswalk – The Wetterfleck woolly cloak, blanket, poncho, traditional Alpine piece of kit what it is
A “Loden Wetterfleck” what the hell is that?
As mentioned before, for you guys who never heard about the woolly German Loden Wetterfleck as yet, here is a quick and unconventionally explanation what I'm carrying in my pack as a universal item that coming in very handy at times and what it is used for in the outdoors, originated and still in use by many Bavarian folks, hunters, as a outdoor coat and harsh weather protection... and much more...
By the way, all the other woolly gear you see in my videos are mostly from Hubertus Loden as well, some of the kit is DIY made, but Material is bought from Hubertus too.

Loppi Finland hiking the Hämeen Ilvesreitti, Häme Lynx Trail with various overnight options
Since I got the very exact CALAZO Tyvek maps in 1:25k (Liesjarvi) of the area around the Hämeen Ilvesreitti, Häme Lynx Trail starting from Loppi in the east going west it allowed me to discover the woods easily, finding water sources and shelter options along the path which is very well maintained and obviously resiliently brought in to a very good shape, which made it very easy not to get lost.
This trail is well worth a try.
So yep this is just the start of a longer slow moving sort of bushcraft hike, actually put together the requirements for classic hiking and bushcraft skills... nevertheless the distances for resupply on food is quite scared and stretched out far apart which makes it a bit tricky to stay on this path for a extended peridot of time. Most finish and local people only going on to this hiking path may for two or three days at a time doing short stretches of it or a weekend only with a car parked up in walking distances, but for a long-term hiker it could be a challenge to cope.
Anyway most of the shelters are BBQ areas like the 1st I came across called "Huhtala" which are not meant for overnight stay in generally unless you got a tent or hammock setup next to it and are very popular specially during the two-month holiday season.

Rough 3-day's journey to Finland, 1st cup of Tea in the woods Hydrapak Katadynfilter Hobo in action
After a dreadful long ferry journey to Finland finally having the 1st rough night in the woods, finding fresh water and a 1st cup of Tea at the lakeside of Aulanko Park.
Meanwhile, on the ferry, 71-year-old Juri from Russia and his family, living in Germany discovered me at my resting place, and we quickly became new friends, sharing some wine and smoked sausages, luckily there were no Vodka involved, but we still had good fun since Juri was very interested in my woolly Rucksack setup and the way I was kitted out with my simplicity and traditional Bushcraft gear.
Made it by train from Helsinki to the smallish but old town of Hämeenlinna and walked to the Aulanko Park and lake for my 1st night in the woods.

DIY Plash-Palatka as Hammock-tarp setup, cooking lesson the hard way, setting a rock on fire WARNING
Regarding the tight spot for my DD-Hammock setup on a sloop in the sticks I'm using the DIY Plasch-Palatka as small tarp for the night in diagonal fashion, making use of the Hubertus-Loden tree-screw for hanging up my gear and start cooking on my trusty old Titan Hobo stove... but instead did set the dry moss on fire by mistake being careless for just a moment... so teaches me a lesson that it's not a good idea to do open fire next to a overgrown rock with dry moss... lucky me that this 2nd day in the woods didn't end up in a disaster... let it be you a warning !! As you can see 1st hand, what can happen in just a few seconds... nevertheless keeping a cool head and quick action instead of panicking prevented a larger catastrophe... enjoying my cold and crunchy Tortellini afterwards anyway.

Made a slightly different Plash-palatka tarp setup with the Hammock, like tuning the easy setup a bit more for comfort.

What's in my Pack part-6 “Water Special” Katadyn filter HydraPak the Spring of Live Lodenrucksack
This gonna be a long video, but the issue around clean drinking water for on the Trail or Bushcraft in generally is quite complex.
So apart from getting to a clean spring water source for showing how I'm filter water on the go for a cup of Tea in the woods, I explain a bit on the importance of water, even if there is plenty around on the trail, but because of agriculture, Industrial pollution and high dense populated areas often making it difficult to find suitable surface drinking water that can be used. I do show the Katadyn Filter-system I'm using out of my woolly pack as well as the larger Katadyn ceramic filter for long term travel as recommendation.
During the 15Km hike I came across wild Deer and other wildlife close by, a bit of History on a crash side of a WW2 British Lancaster bomber aircraft and the importance of water for farmers who depending on clean water too for generations.
At the same time, I take the opportunity for myself to check out If my DIY Lodenrucksack works out the way I wanted it, fully loaded with everything in it.
Sit back and enjoy.

DIY Canvas Tarp - preparing with Dyneema cord and Whoopie Sling
Had this DIY Canvas Tarp made up a while back from the same tent canvas the famous “Tschum 2P SOSWA light” Lavuu type tents are made of... yep had some of the fabric off the roll.. (many thanks to Florian from Tschum), Florian was so kind to sell me some of his stock, so I was able to stitch up two tarps in sice 3x3m, by using the DD-Hammocks 3x3m Ultralight tarp as a pattern with some of my own tweaking idea's to suits my needs.
In this video I just add some Dyneema endless loops and the Whoopie Sling to it to prepare this tarp for quick and easy setup right out of my pack, without the need of any knots or carabineer hooks to use.
The cotton Canvas material I used came from "Tschum" canvas Bushcraft tents and stove... Many Thanks to Florian.

DIY Canvas Plash-Palatka Poncho-Tarp, 2nd-part DIY-Toggles making woodwork and Dyneema splicing
Now this is the 2nd part of my DIY Plash-Palatka Bushcraft project in which I show you how to make the needed wooden toggles that should go with it, before starting to cut and stitch the tarp itself.
Gonna show how to waterproof the wooden toggles with Greenland wax and how to attach this to some Dyneema cordage too.

DIY Canvas Plash-Palatka Poncho-Tarp, 1st-part getting ready and warming up for the project
The 1st part of a larger DIY project, which I guess will become 4-parts in total.
this video contains the preparation, design and making of a smallish additional Tarp to accompany the 3x3m Tent-Tarp, to be used in multiple ways likewise as awning, poncho, weather protection, wind shield, sun shade and just as a small addition to go with my DIY 3x3m canvas tarp. I had a bit leftover from the 3x3m tarp project and now making use of the rest to extend my kit.

Since this video attracted quite some attention over the last year, specially regarding the pattern of the Palatka, I would like to share a link to the original Soviet field manual published in 1942
contains 34 pages about the Plash-Palatka cloak tent, Page-by-page: https://viewer.rsl.ru/ru/rsl01005261770?page=1&rotate=0&theme=white which showing the cloak in great details.
Another good source for the pattern can be found here: https://forum.ww2.ru/index.php?showtopic=6583 if you are only after the pattern drawings to make your own DIY Plash-Palatka.
