The meaning behind the Russian symbol Z

Russia uses the letter Z to show support for President Vladimir Putin's actions in Ukraine, but what does that mean and why do they stick it on tanks, cars and houses?

Images of Russian tanks became commonplace after Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine. And the eagle eye among us may have noticed the white Z drawn above it. It's not clear why the tank had this letter, but the label was widespread, especially since "proud" Russians also started using Monica as a form of support for Putin's invasion.

Kamil Galeev, Colleague of Galina Staroitowa, explained this phenomenon on Twitter and wrote:

“Some people interpret #Z as Zapobedy (for victory). Others-as Zapad (west).

"By the way, this symbol, which was discovered a few days ago, has become a symbol of the new ideology and national identity of Russia."
