Spanish 102 - Learn How to Use Relative Pronouns in Spanish for Beginners Spanish With Profe

In this video you will learn how to use relative pronouns in Spanish. Relative pronouns in Spanish help to connect ideas and thoughts in any given sentence. Today you will learn how to use: que, lo que, and quien or quienes.

Que means that, which, who. This one can refer to people or things. You will use que to talk about a concrete idea, there has to be a concrete reference that que is referring to. Que will be used to talk about people in the absence of commas (,) and prepositions.

Lo que is used to talk about general ideas/thoughts. There is nothing specific about it.

Quien, Quienes refers to people only primarily in the presence of commas (,) and prepostions: a, en, de, por, para, etc.

Este es el libro que compré ayer. (This is the book that I bought yesterday.)
You will notice that in this sentece "que" is referring to "el libro" which is very specific.

Ella trajo todo lo que necesitábamos para la fiesta. (She brought everything that we needed for the party.) In this sentence we are using "lo que" because there is nothing specific about it, she is bringing everything, but we do not know exactly what that includes.

Mi abuela, quien, vive en California es muy amable. (My grandmother who lives in California is very kind.)
We are using quien because we are talking about a person, grandma, and there's a comma too.

Esas son las personas de quienes te hablamos. (Those are the people of whom we talked to you about.)
We are using quienes in this sentence because we are talking about people and there is a preposition "de" and we are talking about more that one person.
