how to get your audience engaged

Here's a crazy-neat trick to entice your audience: Ask them a question. It's so simple, but very often, it's engaging. This is because it's almost impossible for someone NOT to answer.

I'll give you some fun examples: "What's the first thing you'd do with $1 million?" "What's a favourite movie that changed your life?" "What's a word that rhymes with my last name, Blake?"

Here are some others: "What was your first grade teacher's name?" "What's something positive that happened to you as a result of Coronavirus?" "If you could have an hour one-on-one with anyone living or dead, who would it be?"

See? Your brain can't help but answer. Even if you don't answer verbally, you're answering questions in your head all the time. So anytime we read or hear a question, our brain starts searching for and generating answers.

Or, if your brain doesn't have an answer, it says, "I don't know"...which creates curiosity. And curiosity is also stimulating and interesting.

So how can we use this in your marketing and in your small business? By asking your audience questions. This gets their brain focused on you and your message, and it gets their brain moving to search for answers and reflect.

You can use questions in your marketing, in your email subject lines, and in your sales pitches..."Are you making these Three SEO mistakes?" "Is it possible to increase sales without increasing costs?" "Can Blogging Increase Customer Loyalty?"

If I created articles or videos with these titles, would you be interested in them? Very likely because they're hitting on areas that you're curious about. Further, there are two kinds of questions:

Open-ended questions like "What's your biggest marketing challenge," or "Who's your celebrity crush" and then there are "yes / no" questions like "Do you want to learn WordPress" or "Would you go on a date with Drew Barrymore?" Both are powerful ways to engage and stimulate your readers.
