North America is terrified! Hurricane Nora destroys Mexico's coast

Tropical Storm Nora sent torrential rains across the Gulf of California after weakening by a storm that triggered floods and landslides off Mexico's Pacific coast, causing chaos in Puerta Vallarta. Two rivers overflowed in Puerto Vallarta during a storm Saturday night and flooded parts of downtown. The puddle of water broke the bridge. Communities in the coastal states of Michoacan, Colima and Jalisco experienced heavy rain and big waves on Sunday as the storm moved north to hug the coastline.

Nora was downgraded from a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale to a tropical storm on Sunday afternoon, after its maximum wind speed dropped to 70 miles per hour (110km/h). Communities in the coastal states of Michoacan, Colima and Jalisco experienced heavy rains and fierce waves as the storm moving northward hit itself by staying close to the coast. The storm was about 105 miles (165 km) northeast of the city of Mazatlan on Sunday evening and moving north-northwest at a speed of 19 km/h, according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC).

It was blowing at 60mph (96km/h) with higher gusts. "Gradual weakness is expected over several days as the center moves roughly parallel to the Mexican coast," the NHC said. "However, rapid weakness is likely if the center moves inland faster than expected." The NHC said Nora was likely to produce additional heavy rains along Mexico's west coast from the state of Jalisco to Sonora through the weekend. It can also produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides, as well as storm surges and large waves.
