Fontana Dam, NC - Out There! Premier

Fontana Dam is a 2,365 ft long 480 ft tall hydroelectric dam located in Swain and Graham Counties North Carolina. It was built in the 140s by the TVA to accommodate raising electric demands of the Tennessee Valley during World War 2. It is the tallest dam in the Eastern United States and at the time of its construction the 4th tallest in the world. It impounds the deepest lake in North Carolina the 10,230 acre Fontana Lake. Which is located along the southwestern boundary of the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. The Appalachian Trail crosses the top of the dam. It is the uppermost of five dams along the Little Tennessee River. A 135 mile river that runs from the mountains of Georgia and empties into the Tennessee River. The dams construction costs over 70 Million dollars displaced 1,311 families, deforested 5,125 acres of land, moved 1,047 graves, and over 60 miles of roads were relocated or lost. But it’s three generators produce 293 megawatts of power. Fontana Lake has 238 miles of shoreline and 10,230 acres of water surface and in some places is over 400 feet deep.
