Jennifer Rubin: ‘Chuck Schumer Needs to Go’

CAPEHART: “Jennifer, the key line in what Senator Murphy said was, ‘But we need to have a conversation inside the caucus about whether we are willing to stand up to Republicans.’ I mean, if you couldn’t do it on the continuing resolution fight, how are you going to do it on the reconciliation bill or even raising the debt ceiling?”
RUBIN: “Let me be blunt. President Biden stayed around too long and we got Donald Trump. If Chuck Schumer stays along, the democracy may be gone. It’s not simply that they have to have a conversation within the caucus. Chuck Schumer needs to go. To quote one of my favorite movies, he is not a wartime consigliere. He is the wrong man at the wrong time. He gave an interview with The New York Times that was even worse than you imagine. He was doddering. He was cranky. He was insisting he had done the right thing. He was recycling a rationalization for the shutdown that was completely bogus. They need someone who is dynamic and who is as forceful as some of those House Democrats that we have seen and, frankly, people like Chris Murphy. I think they need a change of heart. And I don’t think the Democratic base is going to stand for the same old, same old. And unless they see a leadership change at the top, they’re going to have problems.”
