Joy Reid out!
By Terry A. Hurlbut
MSNBC anchor Joy Reid, hostess of The Reid-Out, is now … out. Yesterday morning, the first reports came from nearly all media outlets, that MSNBC had canceled her show. Her final episode will air this Tuesday (February 25) at 7:00 p.m. EST. The only real question about the cancellation is: what took the network so long? She had been digging her career grave for years – but even now, leftist media personalities and viewers wonder what happened.
How the Joy Reid ouster broke
The New York Times broke the story early yesterday morning, citing “two people familiar with the changes.” MSNBC has a new president, Rebecca Kutler, who took over the network last month. Over the weekend, Ms. Kutler announced a flurry of changes to the network’s lineup. She has replaced The Reid-Out with a three-person panel (Symone Sanders Townsend, Alicia Menendez, and Michael Steele). These three presently host a show titled The Weekend which airs Saturday and Sunday mornings. That show was a relative ratings winner last year, according to The Wrap. (Michael Steele is a former Republican National Committee chairman, and Symone Sanders Townsend is a former Democratic “strategist.”) Whether their show will keep its high ratings in prime time, remains for viewers to see.
Other changes MSNBC plans to make, could include expanding former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki’s show from Sunday and Monday nights, to six nights a week. (That decision is not final, however.)
Fox Digital reported that Joy Reid saw a 28 percent decline in her ratings over this time last year.
Joy Reid and her less-than-inspiring history
Joy Reid developed an extremely abrasive commentary style, which sounds today like accusing all who disagree with her of racism. But six years ago she made television history after someone found some controversial content on her old blog, “The Reid Report.” In 2018, someone found some comments she made, comments unflattering to the Alphabet Soup crowd.
That in itself would be a non sequitur, not because Reid is herself an “Alphabet Souper” (evidence of that is lacking) but because anything against Alphabet Soup is very un-leftist. Reid alleged that someone had hacked her blog site and written that content under her by-line but without her authorization. (Problem: The Wayback Machine showed a snapshot proving she wrote the comments.) She claimed to have asked the FBI to investigate – and apparently she did. Then she let fly an emotional outburst on air when the inconsistencies became too many to explain.
But she actually recovered from that, and became a staple on MSNBC thereafter. Her content never again strayed from leftist orthodoxy. But it became more outrageous as the years passed.
Samples of her outrageous remarks
In recent years, watching The Reid-Out became a game: what outrageous thing will Joy Reid say this time? The Gateway Pundit has an extensive “morgue” on her. At least since 2019 she has accused Donald Trump of wanting to be a dictator. In her mind, even a patriotic occasion is suspect.
In 2020, when Black Lives Matter incited riots and looting sprees in America’s largest cities, Joy Reid said those were false-flag pseudo-operations – by “white nationalists.” On the day after Joe Biden’s inauguration, she still advanced theories about Trump being a Russian asset. In June 2021, she apparently made light of Antifa, saying they “don’t really show up anywhere.” That was so outrageous that MSNBC tried to cover that up through creative editing.
But as “astronomical summer” began, she started to lose ratings, when she didn’t have Donald Trump to accuse of anything. So she found other people to say outrageous things about. For example, authorities found the body of one Gabby Petito in Grand Teton National Park in September 2021. Joy Reid criticized the coverage of that crime, calling it “Missing White Woman Syndrome.”
Her ratings were so low in January 2022 that she faced cancellation then. Then came the Russia-Ukraine War. So she teed off again, saying Americans cared about Ukrainians only because they were white and Christian.
Midterms and Thanksgiving
As Midterms approached, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) warned anyone planning on looting that Florida respected the Second Amendment. Joy Reid called that a racist threat. Then as Hispanics expressed increasing support for DeSantis’ reelection campaign, Reid and Jemele Hill denounced that phenomenon. They seemed to think that white segregationist attitudes were somehow rubbing off on Hispanics.
She also said that “inflation” was a non-issue, because most people did not even know what the word meant.
As Thanksgiving approached that year, Joy Reid called the Thanksgiving story “a simplistic fairy tale” and said, “America was founded on violence.”
Naturally, when the Supreme Court handed down its decision in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard and UNC, Joy Reid was not happy. She actually said:
Let me be perfectly clear: I got into Harvard only because of affirmative action.
Either she was admitting she didn’t deserve a Harvard education, or she took part in the same lie about what affirmative action was and is: discrimination against the better-qualified. The lie, of course, is that affirmative action is about equality of opportunity, when it’s really about equality of result.
Trump’s reelection campaign
By late summer of 2023, Joy Reid did make one thing “perfectly clear”: she sees everything through a racial lens. That, of course, means that “racist” is identical to “white.” But it also means that any non-white who supports Donald Trump, is a traitor to all things non-white.
Last March, Reid suggested the Supreme Court would somehow clear a path for Trump to become President for life. That came even before the Court invalidated Colorado’s exclusion of Trump from primary and other ballots. (Trump didn’t carry Colorado, but he came closer than in 2016 or 2020.)
In June 2024, someone made fun of Reid’s bleach-blonde hair, calling it “Trump hair.” So she shaved her head.
As Joe Biden began his debate with Trump, Joy Reid said letting Trump “stand next to the actual President” was “deeply offensive.” That debate, of course, didn’t go very well for Biden – so Reid insisted she would vote for Biden anyway – even were he in a coma.
On July 13, a would-be assassin tried to kill Trump. Five days later, Joy Reid said Trump had staged the scene.
As the campaign wore on – and Biden dropped out of the race – Reid’s behavior went from bad to worse. Then came the election itself.
Trump wins – and Joy Reid can’t take it
On election day, The Gateway Pundit shared samples of her choice words before all the votes were in. She predicted Trump’s immigration crackdown, as one would expect. Then she called Florida an “extreme right-wing fascist state.”
The election returns didn’t help her mood. As Trump carried State after State, she ranted on about “white women voters” and Latino males letting Kamala Harris down. As the week ended, she suggested that Democrats avoid their Trump-supporting relatives over the holidays.
The week after the election brought the likely real explanation for Joy Reid’s eventual cancellation. Ratings for Joy Reid and Joe Scarborough both cratered. NBC Universal started then to look for a way to spin MSNBC off – which has happened.
Two days later, Reid deleted her X account. She said she didn’t want to support the platform under its new ownership. But she waited long enough! Elon Musk bought the platform two years before. So why she really deleted her X account, is anyone’s guess.
Two remaining wild theories remain to recount. She accused the “billionaire class” of deliberately burning out Los Angeles so they could snap up properties for oil and gas extraction. Then she accused Congressional Republicans of willingness to comply with Trump selling America to Russia. That last was her explanation for most Republicans having rediscovered Party discipline.
Beginning of the end
In the last week before Christmas, Joy Reid took a salary cut as the channel’s ratings slid even further. That came even before she spouted her latest wild conspiracy theories.
Reaction to the cancellation depended, of course, on which side of the American political divide one happened to be on. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) probably said it best:
Good morning!!
MSNBC just canceled Joy Reid’s show.
The ad execs and the board finally figured out that racism, lies, and Trump derangement syndrome will put them out of business.

Keith Olbermann blamed Joe Scarborough for MSNBC’s ratings slide, and said a three-host panel show wouldn’t work in prime time. Other liberals made similar comments, or else suggested that Reid lost her job because she was black and “solo.”
But the internal reaction was more telling. Clearly, MSNBC had not intended that the public at large find out so soon. Yesterday evening, Rebecca Kutler called an emergency “virtual meeting” with Reid’s programming staff. She confirmed that all who worked on The Reid-Out are laid off, but encouraged them to apply for other jobs with the channel. The staff did not find that reassuring, for nothing could change the central fact: the show is over.
Analysis
Few people can decide which is worse: a government official (elected or unelected) who makes use of conspiracy theories and false claims and promises to gain or retain power, or a journalist who does the same to gain or retain circulation, viewership, audience, etc. The latter is what Joy Reid has been doing for at least twenty years. The only question left to ask, is: does she believe in her own swindle, or not? If not, no one can trust her. But if so, then she definitely needs psychiatric help (and it would cost her far more than five cents!).
Even worse is the waste of production and other talent to produce, to quote Rep. Greene, a tissue of “racism, lies, and Trump derangement syndrome.” The problem is that the entire network is infected with what Elon Musk famously called “the woke mind virus.” And it has been so infected for at least thirty years. It was so infected when Rush Limbaugh was still alive, and called it “(P)MSNBC.”
In sum, Joy Reid is a symptom of a larger problem that affects the entire legacy and mainstream media universe. If Jim Hoft and company at TGP found her insane, she was the worst example, but not the only example. Attempts to blame Joe Scarborough for MSNBC’s troubles fail at once. Though his ratings tanked, hers tanked harder. She is, in short, a divisive figure – and only she can change that. (And it might already be too late.)
