Lammy pitch on Sudan raises questions about UK ties to Israel and UAE

UK foreign secretary asks 'where's the liberal outrage' about Sudan, but cannot answer questions about the UAE's involvement.

Pinned to the top of David Lammy’s X profile right now there is a message: “We must not forget Sudan.” Accompanying this is a video in which the British foreign secretary, white shirt - one button undone - tucked into light cream chinos, strides through the Chadian desert landscape of Adre, the Chadian border town now hosting more than 230,000 Sudanese refugees. “Over Sudan’s border, just behind me, its people are suffering the biggest humanitarian catastrophe on the planet,” Lammy says. He recounts the story told to him by a woman who had been burned, beaten and raped. Britain’s foreign secretary turns to the camera to ask a question: “Where is the liberal outrage?”
“We cannot have a hierarchy of conflict, with this conflict at the bottom.” The war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary has been ongoing since April 2023, displacing over 11 million people and leaving an unknown number - possibly as many as 200,000 - dead. Western involvement in diplomatic efforts to end the war has been either unsuccessful or negligible. Britain, once the colonial power, “has been completely absent on Sudan,” Cameron Hudson, a former US State Department official, told Middle East Eye. Lammy’s trip to Chad was the first ever taken by a British foreign secretary. It included a meeting with Chad's leader, Mahamat Deby, in the capital N'Djamena and came with an announcement of a further £20m in funding for Sudan, to add to the doubling of UK aid in November to £226.5m.
