Exploding pagers used in apparent Israeli attack on Hezbollah made in Hungary, accused firm says
Taiwanese company Gold Apollo said Wednesday that it authorized its brand on the pagers that exploded in Lebanon and Syria in an apparent Israeli operation targeting Hezbollah’s communications network but that another company based in Budapest manufactured them. Pagers used by the militant group Hezbollah exploded near-simultaneously Tuesday in Lebanon and Syria, killing at least nine people, including an 8-year-old girl, and wounding nearly 3,000. Hezbollah and the Lebanese government blamed Israel for what appeared to be a sophisticated remote attack. An American official said Israel briefed the United States on Tuesday after the conclusion of the operation, in which small amounts of explosive secreted in the pagers were detonated. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the information publicly.

Israel’s Netanyahu announces expanded war goals to include Lebanon border
Israeli prime minister says war aims should include enabling Israelis who fled areas near the Lebanon border to return home.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said his goals for the war in Gaza have expanded to include enabling Israelis who have fled areas near the Lebanese border to return to their homes. There has been almost daily cross-border fire between Israeli forces and the Iran-backed Lebanese armed group Hezbollah since Israel began its war on Gaza nearly a year ago. The exchanges have forced tens of thousands of people on both sides from their homes and threatened to ignite a wider regional conflict. The decision to include “the safe return of the residents of the north to their homes” was approved during an overnight meeting of Netanyahu’s security cabinet, his office said in a statement on Tuesday. The decision comes a day after Israel’s Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant told a visiting United States envoy that “military action” was the “only way left to ensure the return of Israel’s northern communities”.
Hezbollah officials have said the group would stand down if a ceasefire was reached in Gaza, but Gallant warned that time was “running out”.

UN staff member among 10 killed during Israel military operation in West Bank
A United Nations staff member was among 10 people killed during an Israeli military operation in the occupied West Bank, the Israeli military and the UN said on Friday. Sufyan Jaber Abed Jawwad, who worked as a sanitation worker in El Far’a Camp in the West Bank, “was shot and killed on the roof of his home by a sniper during an overnight Israeli military operation in the early morning of September 12,” the United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) said in a statement.
Jawwad received three shots in the chest “while on the roof of his house having a coffee,” Juliette Touma, the agency’s communications director, also told CNN on Friday. But the Israeli military has accused Jawwad and the others killed of being “terrorists.” Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani, spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), confirmed Friday that Jawwad was killed in an operation in the West Bank’s Far’a area and alleged that he was “hurling explosive devices that posed a threat to the forces operating in the area.” “IDF troops opened fire toward him to remove said threat, and he was killed,” Shoshani said. He added that Jawwad was “known to Israeli security forces and he had been complicit in additional terrorist activities.”

Israeli strikes in Syria kill at least 25, war monitor says
State media says more than 40 injured as military research centre for arms production hit, according to sources.
Israeli jets have launched a substantial strike on targets in Syria, killing at least 25 people, according to an opposition war monitor that said it was one of the most violent such attacks in years. The main target appeared to be a military research centre in Masyaf associated with Syria’s chemical and ballistic missiles programme, but explosions were also heard in Damascus, Homs and Tartus. Syrian state media had put the death toll at 16 with 40 wounded. The attack on Sunday night struck targets associated with pro-Iranian militias as well as the “scientific research facility” near Hama, reportedly run by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.

Israeli lawmaker calls for B'Tselem chief to be arrested for 'assisting the enemy'
Likud MP urges police to question Yuli Novak under law punishable by death penalty or life sentence after Security Council speech.
An Israeli lawmaker has written a letter to the head of the police calling for the detention and interrogation of the director of Israeli human rights group B'Tselem, following a speech she made at the United Nations Security Council earlier this week. Tally Gotliv, a member of Israel's parliament, penned the letter to Israeli Chief Police Commissioner Daniel Levy on Thursday, calling for Yuli Novak, B'Tselem's executive director, to be questioned. On Wednesday, Novak told the UN Security Council via video link that Israel had pursued a goal of "Jewish supremacy" over the past 11 months, since its war on Gaza began following the 7 October Hamas-led attacks. The surprise attack by Palestinian fighters on southern Israeli communities in October killed more than 1,000 Israelis, and dozens of foreigners. Around 250 others were taken captive back to Gaza. Since then, Israeli forces have killed more than 40,000 Palestinians in the enclave, the majority of whom are women and children.

US and Iraq agree on plan to withdraw US troops: Report
Hundreds of US soldiers would be pulled out of Iraq in September 2025 and the remaining would depart by the end of 2026.
US and Iraqi negotiators have agreed on a plan to withdraw American soldiers from Iraq after US troops came under repeated attack by Iranian proxies. According to Reuters, the agreement still needs “a final go-ahead” from leaders in Baghdad and Washington, but is seen as a done deal, with one US official telling the news agency that “it's now just a question of when to announce it”. The deal would see hundreds of US soldiers pulled out of Iraq in September 2025 and the last remaining US troops in the country departing by the end of 2026. Critics of the US’s “forever wars" are likely to welcome an agreement, but it could raise concerns among US policymakers and allies in the region who are focused on Iran’s influence. Formal talks on the status of the roughly 2,500 US troops in Iraq began in January but were delayed amid tensions over Israel’s war on Gaza.

Israeli troops shoot Turkish-American woman dead at West Bank protest, officials say
Israeli troops shot and killed a Turkish-American woman who had been taking part in a protest against settlement expansion in the Israeli-occupied West Bank on Friday, Palestinian and Turkish officials said.
The White House said it was deeply disturbed by the death of Aysenur Ezgi Eygi and called on Israel to investigate. Turkey's foreign ministry said she was shot in the head, and blamed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government for her death.
Palestinian officials described her as a 26-year-old activist from Seattle who held U.S. and Turkish citizenship. Eygi had recently graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle, the school's president, Ana Mari Cauce, said in a statement describing the news of her death as "awful" and saying Eygi had a "positive influence" on other students.
She studied psychology and Middle Eastern languages and cultures at the university, her family said in a statement late on Friday that was shared by the pro-Palestinian organization Institute of Middle East Understanding.

Israel pulls out of Jenin, but denies end of West Bank offensive
Residents of city its refugee camp return to homes following 10-day Israeli assault.
Israeli forces have pulled out of Jenin after a 10-day assault, but the military has denied it is ending its operation in the occupied West Bank.
The offensive, which has so far left at least 39 Palestinians dead, saw soldiers backed by armoured vehicles and bulldozers targeting the city and its adjacent refugee camp, forcing the flight of many of the residents. Tensions in the West Bank were raised even further on Friday when a US citizen was reportedly shot dead by Israeli troops near Nablus. Palestinians started returning to their Jenin homes on Friday, while those who had been trapped by the offensive were able to venture outside for the first time in more than a week. One resident of the refugee camp said the Israelis left early in the morning.

Biden accuses Netanyahu of not doing enough to secure ceasefire deal
US president says White House is 'very close' to presenting final ceasefire proposal to both Hamas and Israel.
US President Joe Biden on Monday accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of not doing enough to secure a deal with Hamas that would see the release of hostages held in Gaza. Biden was commenting in response to a question posed by a reporter at the White House. When asked whether he thought Netanyahu was doing enough to reach a hostage deal, the president said "no" without elaborating. Biden spoke prior to a decisive meeting with Vice President Kamala Harris and the White House's national security team to determine the strategy to push for a final ceasefire deal. "They discussed next steps in the ongoing effort to secure the release of hostages, including continuing consultations with co-mediators Qatar and Egypt," a White House statement about the meeting said.
The comment comes after Israeli forces over the weekend recovered the bodies of six hostages, including 23-year-old American-Israeli Hersh Goldberg-Polin whose parents spoke at the Democratic National Convention last month.

Gaza polio vaccine rollout starts well, UN says
The first full day of a campaign to vaccinate 640,000 children against polio in Gaza has been successful, the UN says.
The rollout relies on a series of localised pauses in fighting between Israeli forces and Hamas fighters, and the first three-day window began on Sunday. "So far, it's going well and the turnaround is really good,” Salim Oweis, a spokesman for the UN children’s fund Unicef, told the BBC. To be effective, the World Health Organization (WHO) says at least 90% of children under 10 must be immunised in a short time frame. The drive follows the first confirmed case of polio in 25 years in Gaza. On Thursday, the WHO announced an agreement with Israel for limited pauses in the fighting to allow the polio vaccination programme to take place. Around 1.3 million doses of the vaccine were recently brought in through the Kerem Shalom checkpoint by Unicef. The agency has had to keep them in cold storage in its warehouse at the correct temperature to maintain their potency. Another shipment of 400,000 doses is set to be delivered to Gaza soon.
On Sunday, Palestinians were able to take their children to three health centres in central Gaza in the first phase of the campaign, which will later extend to the north and the south.

What a Kamala Harris Middle East policy team could look like
Kamala Harris could lean on the allies of her national security adviser, Phil Gordon, to fill key Middle East positions in a future administration.
Kamala Harris has been tight-lipped about how she would approach US foreign policy challenges in the Middle East. Her interview on CNN last week, intended to be a media debut, touched on the only crisis in the region that can’t be ignored. “I’m unequivocal and unwavering in my commitment to Israel’s defence and its ability to defend itself,” Harris said when asked about Israel’s war in Gaza, before adding that “far too many innocent Palestinians have been killed”. While Harris isn’t talking much about the Middle East, campaign insiders and Biden administration officials are already circling in the wings, whispering names that could fill out positions handling Middle East files in a Harris administration. Ironically, despite Harris’s guarded position on the Middle East, one thread that unites many insiders who could make her potential administration is their previous work on the failed 2013-2014 Israeli-Palestine peace talks. “For the Middle East, think John Kerry 2.0 and people who made their bones during the Israel-Palestine peace negotiations,” a former senior member of the Obama administration told Middle East Eye, referring to the US secretary of state from 2013-2017.

Hamas says Gaza captives will return ‘in coffins’ if Israel continues raids
Group’s armed wing Qassam Brigades issues statement, two days after bodies of six captives are recovered from a Gaza tunnel by Israeli forces.
The armed wing of the Palestinian group Hamas says captives held in Gaza would return to Israel “in coffins” if Israeli military pressure continues, warning that “new instructions” had been given to its fighters guarding the captives in case Israeli troops approach. “[Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu’s insistence on freeing the captives through military pressure instead of reaching a deal means they will go back to their families in coffins. Their families have to choose between receiving them dead or alive,” Abu Obeida, spokesman for the Qassam Brigades, said in a statement on Monday, two days after the bodies of six captives were recovered by Israel.

Three Israelis killed in West Bank shooting amid deadly Jenin raids
Three police officers were killed at a checkpoint shooting near Tarqumiyah, south of Hebron.
Three Israeli security personnel have been killed in a shooting at a checkpoint in Hebron, as Israel brought reinforcements in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin as part of its ongoing deadly raids. The shooting on Sunday took place as the Israeli army continued its deadly assault on Jenin for a fifth consecutive day killing at least 24 Palestinians. Israel has killed more than 500 people as it intensified operations in the West Bank since it launched war on Gaza on October 7. More than 40,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza in the past 11 months. The police confirmed three police officers were killed near the Tarqumiyah checkpoint, south of Hebron. Earlier today, the Israeli national emergency service Magen David Adom said two people, a man and a woman in their 30s, were declared deceased at the scene while a third man in his 50s was transferred to a hospital. A little-known armed group calling itself the Khalil al-Rahman Brigade claimed responsibility. Hamas praised the attack as a “natural response” to the war in Gaza and called for more. “Attacks so far have been centered around the northern West Bank and in the Jordan Valley area and now we see more of them coming from the south of the West Bank,” Al Jazeera’s Niba Ibrahim, reporting from Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, said.

10-month-old contracts Gaza’s first case of polio in 25 years
Doctors in war-torn Gaza have detected a case of polio for the first time in 25 years, health officials said, as international aid bodies call for a pause in the conflict to make way for a vaccination drive.
Traces of poliovirus were found in a 10-month-old child in the central Gazan city of Deir al-Balah, the health ministry said in a statement late Friday, adding that the baby had not received any polio jabs. Previously, UNICEF said poliovirus was detected in environmental samples from Khan Younis and Deir al-Balah in July, with stool samples of three children being sent to a lab in Jordan for testing. Polio is a highly contagious disease that mainly affects children under the age of 5. It targets the nervous system and can cause paralysis and death in extreme cases. The resurgence of the virus – eliminated in most of the developed world – highlights the struggles facing Gaza’s two million residents, who have lived under Israeli bombardment since October last year. Many people in the enclave are deprived of food, medical supplies and clean water, with up to 90% of the population internally displaced.
More than 40,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since Israel launched its war on Hamas following the group’s October 7 attack, according to officials. The Hamas attack killed more than 1,200 Israelis, with 250 taken hostage, according to the Israeli government.

A Family Flees and a Mother Mourns After Israeli Settlers Attack a Palestinian Village
Residents of the village in the Israeli-occupied West Bank say one Palestinian man was killed by rampaging settlers. Israel’s military confirmed the village was attacked. More than 2.7 million Palestinians reside in ancestral cities, towns and farming villages in the West Bank, where, for generations, many have lived off the land. But that existence is increasingly under threat as more Israelis move to the territory — they now number nearly 500,000 — to live in settlements considered illegal under international law.
Since the Oct. 7 Hamas-led attack on Israel and the start of the war in Gaza, attacks by Jewish settlers on Palestinians across the West Bank have become common. There have been about 1,250 such attacks in this time, according to the United Nations — 25 in the past week alone.
More than 589 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces or Jewish settlers in the West Bank since Oct. 7, according to Palestinian health officials. Eighteen Israelis have been killed in the territory in the same time period, according to the United Nations. On Thursday night, Mr. al-Seda became one of the latest Palestinian casualties. He had just joined the other men who were running in the direction of the rampaging settlers when, according to residents and Palestinian health officials, he was shot in the chest by a settler.

‘Investigation into Israeli Soldiers’ Sexual Assault of Palestinian Detainee
CCTV footage has emerged allegedly showing Israel Defence Forces (IDF) soldiers sexually abusing a Palestinian detainee. Human rights groups say the abuse has been ‘going on for decades’
The abuse, torture and death of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails and detention facilities has finally been covered by the Western media following a report by Israel’s leading human rights organisation last week called ‘Welcome to Hell’ – but it has been going on “for decades”.
The international coverage of B’Tselem‘s findings – it collected the testimonies of 55 Palestinians held, mostly without charge, since Hamas launched its attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 – also comes on the heels of an Israeli investigation into the alleged sexual assault of Palestinian prisoners at one of its notorious detention centres, Sde Teiman, in the south of the country. But Israel’s investigation is a token one, ignoring many other abuses in much larger numbers, and is self-serving. Previous Israeli investigations have been whitewashed and resulted in a dismally low conviction rate, critics say. “The Occupation’s decision to open an investigation into the rape (at Sde Teiman) is not a start to anything. It’s all for show and international consumption,” Jenna Abu Hafna, from the Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association based in Ramallah, told Byline Times.

Israel's Netanyahu 'refused to meet David Lammy over UK's ICC position'
Netanyahu denied the British foreign secretary's requests for a meeting, according to Israeli media reports.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refused to meet British Foreign Secretary David Lammy on Friday during his trip to Israel, according to Israeli media reports. The British government made multiple requests for a sit-down meeting with Netanyahu, Israel's Channel 13 News and The Times of Israel reported. But the government was told Netanyahu had a scheduling conflict. According to Channel 13 News, citing Israeli sources, the Israeli prime minister was angered by the new Labour government's recent decision to withdraw British objections to the International Criminal Court deciding on issuing arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant. A Foreign Office source told Middle East Eye there had been no plans for David Lammy to meet Netanyahu.

Family, including six children, among 23 killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza
As Israel’s deadly attacks continue, UNRWA warns the so-called Gaza ‘humanitarian zone’ has shrunk to just 11% of the Strip.
A family, including six children, have been killed in the central Gaza Strip, in the latest waves of Israel’s deadly attacks across the besieged Palestinian territory. At least 23 Palestinians were killed overnight and into Sunday, according to numbers from local health authorities. The parents and their six children were killed in Deir el-Balah in the central part of the Strip, Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital said. The grandfather of the children said their mother worked for the United Nations. “My daughter, together with her husband and six children, was sleeping peacefully at home in Dier al-Balah. They were taken by surprise, an Israeli missile landed over their heads. The entire house was flattened. They were all killed,” Mohammed Awad Khattab told Al Jazeera. “My daughter has been struggling to have children for years. She had those children through IVF … What wrong did those innocent children do? Were they posing any danger to Israel? Were they carrying arms?” he asked. Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum, reporting from Deir el-Balah, said: “Four of her children were twins and they have been lined up together in order to be buried in cemeteries here in this town.

Netanyahu and Likud lead in new Israeli election poll
The ruling party is projected to win the most seats in a new election but is expected to fall short of an overall majority.
More Israelis favour Benjamin Netanyahu as prime minister than any other leader, and his Likud party is poised to win the most seats in a new election, according to a poll published on Friday. The poll, conducted by Lazar Research and cited by the Israeli newspaper Maariv, said 42 percent of respondents find Netanyahu best suited for prime minister, whereas 40 percent would prefer his centre-right rival, Benny Gantz. Likud would win 22 seats in Israel's parliament, the Knesset, should elections be held today, according to the poll, compared to 20 seats for Gantz’s National Unity party. Likud got 21 seats in Maariv’s June poll, with National Unity getting 24. The parties that currently make up Netanyahu's ruling coalition would, however, get 53 seats overall, compared to the opposition camp’s 57, with 10 seats going to parties representing Palestinian citizens of Israel. These results show changing fortunes for the prime minister, who has performed poorly in polls following the 7 October Hamas-led attack and war on Gaza.

Kamala Harris aides reject Israel arms embargo, refuting 'Uncommitted' activists
Uncommitted campaign says Democratic nominee will lead a 'more humane' policy on Gaza despite arms embargo snub.
Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris' team has publicly disavowed suggestions that she is open to an arms embargo on Israel, a day after progressive activists described an "openness" from the vice president to discuss regulating military aid to Israel. In a statement from Harris' campaign, the US vice president said that she "has been clear: she will always work to ensure Israel is able to defend itself against Iran and Iran-backed terrorist groups". On Thursday morning, Phil Gordon, Harris' national security advisor in her capacity as vice president, issued an additional clarification, writing on social media platform X that Harris "does not support an arms embargo on Israel". The statements from Harris' teams are in contradiction to a statement on Wednesday issued by Layla Elabed and Abbas Alawieh, founders of the Uncommitted national movement, that has sought to push the Democratic Party to change its policies on Israel's war on Gaza. The Uncommitted activists said they spoke briefly with Harris and her vice presidential candidate Tim Walz, and said Harris "shared her sympathies and expressed an openness to a meeting with Uncommitted leaders to discuss an arms embargo".

Iran will respond at ‘right time’ to killing of Hamas leader
Iran’s acting foreign minister has said the country will respond to the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh at the “right time” in the "appropriate" manner, following a day of intense diplomacy in the Middle East.
His comments came during an emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), a group of states with Muslim-majority populations, which convened in Saudi Arabia to discuss Iran’s response to the killing. The US said it hoped OIC members would caution Iran against taking “steps to escalate the conflict”. Tensions in the Middle East have soared since Haniyeh’s assassination in Tehran last week. Iran and its allies blamed Israel, though Israel has not commented.

Israeli strike on Gaza school kills more than 100 people
Authorities in Gaza said Israeli bombs hit the school-turned-shelter as people were praying and triggered a fire.
More than 100 Palestinians have been killed and dozens wounded in an Israeli strike on a school sheltering displaced people in Gaza City, according to officials in the enclave. Three Israeli bombs hit al-Tabin school, located in the Daraj district, Gaza’s civil defence agency said of the attack on Saturday, which it described as a “horrific massacre”.
Women, children and the elderly are reported to be among the dead and the toll was expected to rise. The attack took place while people were performing morning prayers and triggered a fire that ripped through the building. Ismail al-Thawabta, the head of Gaza’s Government Media Office, told Al Jazeera that the Israeli army used three bombs weighing 2,000 pounds (907kg) each in its attack. He said Israel was aware of the presence of displaced people inside the school. The Israeli military said its air forces struck a “command and control centre” that “served as a hideout for Hamas terrorists and commanders”. Without providing evidence, the Israeli military said in a separate statement that it had intelligence indicating there were 20 Hamas and Islamic Jihad fighters, including senior commanders, operating from the school. It also said that the civilian casualty figures given by Palestinian authorities were inaccurate.

‘Everything is legitimate’: Israeli leaders defend soldiers accused of rape
Israeli society is divided over the arrest of 10 soldiers for the brutal gang rape of a Palestinian prisoner caught on video.
Video has emerged of a gang rape of a Palestinian prisoner by guards at the Sde Teiman detention facility in the Negev desert, southern Israel. The video, which has been verified by Al Jazeera, shows the prisoner being selected from a larger group lying bound on the floor. The victim is then escorted to a wall, where guards, using their shields to hide their identity from the camera, proceed to rape him. The attack is believed to have been so brutal that, after he was transferred to hospital, Israeli media reported that the victim was unable to walk.
Ten soldiers were ultimately arrested for the rape on July 29, in a case that has rocked Israeli society. The soldiers belong to a unit known as Force 100, which is tasked with guarding the Sde Teiman facility, according to Haaretz. Military prosecutors released three of the arrested soldiers on August 4, adding to the two previously released by investigators following a military court hearing in Kfar Yona on July 30, at which protesters gathered in support of the soldiers under arrest.

German court fines woman for ‘from the river to the sea’ chant
Defence lawyer calls the $655 fine against 22-year-old protester a ‘dark day for freedom of expression’.
A German court has imposed a $655 (600 euro) fine on a woman for using the slogan – “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” – during a protest last year, a ruling her lawyer decried as an assault on free speech. Lawyer Alexander Gorski, who represented the 22-year-old woman in Berlin, said the decision on Tuesday was “a dark day for freedom of expression”. “My client only wanted to express her hope for a future of democratic coexistence for all people in the region,” he told AFP news agency, adding that the woman, identified only as Ava M, would appeal the decision. A court spokesperson said the woman was found guilty of using the slogan during a demonstration at Berlin’s Neukoelln district on October 11, days after the Gaza war began. The court concluded that the use of the phrase “could only be understood as a denial of Israel’s right to exist and an endorsement” of Hamas’s October 7 attack, the spokesperson said. By October 11, Israel had killed 1,537 Palestinians, according to local authorities, more than the number of Israelis killed in the October 7 attack. Antiwar activists had been organising protests calling for a ceasefire at that time.

Biden meets national security team as fears of Iran attack on Israel grow
US President Joe Biden met his senior national security team on Monday as concerns of a possible Iranian retaliatory attack on Israel grew.
Mr Biden said he had been briefed on preparations to support Israel should it be attacked, while Secretary of State Antony Blinken said officials were working "around the clock" to prevent an escalation.
Tensions have risen over the last week following the assassination of Hamas' political leader Ismail Haniyeh, for which Iran has blamed Israel and vowed “severe” retaliation. Israel has not claimed responsibility for the assassination. Numerous countries, including the US and UK, have also told their citizens to leave Lebanon, from where it is feared Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militia and political movement, could play a role in any response. During Monday's briefing, Mr Biden was told the timing and nature of an Iranian attack remained unclear, according to US news site Axios, external. A day earlier, Mr Blinken reportedly told his G7 counterparts that Iran and Hezbollah could attack Israel within 24 to 48 hours, external. In a statement released after the briefing, Mr Biden said: "We received updates on threats posed by Iran and its proxies, diplomatic efforts to de-escalate regional tensions, and preparations to support Israel should it be attacked again." He added that steps were being taken to respond to attacks on US forces "in a manner and place of our choosing". On Monday, several US personnel were injured in a suspected rocket attack on a US military base in Iraq. Speaking to reporters earlier in the day, Mr Blinken said officials were "engaged in intense diplomacy pretty much around the clock with a very simple message: All parties must refrain from escalation". "Escalation is not in anyone's interests. It will only lead to more conflict, more violence, more insecurity," he said.
