On November 14, 1889, Journalist Nellie Bly Embarked On A Groundbreaking Journey To Circumnavigate The Globe. Inspired By Jules Verne's Novel "Around The World In Eighty Days," She Aimed To Complete The Trip In Less Time. Departing From Hoboken, New Jersey, Bly Traveled Alone, Carrying Minimal Luggage And Essential Funds.
Bly's Route Included England, France, Italy, The Suez Canal, Ceylon (Now Sri Lanka), The Straits Settlements (Penang And Singapore), Hong Kong, And Japan. In France, She Met Jules Verne In Amiens, Discussing Her Ambitious Expedition.
Unbeknownst To Bly, The Cosmopolitan Magazine Sponsored Journalist Elizabeth Bisland To Undertake A Competing Journey In The Opposite Direction. Bisland Departed On The Same Day, Adding A Competitive Element To The Endeavor.
Facing Challenges Such As Rough Seas And Transportation Delays, Bly Arrived In San Francisco On January 21, 1890, Two Days Behind Schedule. To Ensure Her Success, Joseph Pulitzer, Owner Of The New York World, Chartered A Private Train, The "Miss Nellie Bly Special," To Transport Her Across The Country.
On January 25, 1890, At 3:51 P.M., Nellie Bly Returned To New Jersey, Completing Her Journey In 72 Days, 6 Hours, And 11 Minutes. This Achievement Surpassed The Fictional Record Of Phileas Fogg And Captivated The Public's Imagination.
Bly's Feat Demonstrated The Advancements In Transportation And Communication Of The Era. Her Success Also Challenged Societal Norms, Showcasing Women's Capabilities In Undertaking Ambitious And Public Endeavors. Her Journey Remains A Testament To Determination And The Spirit Of Exploration.
