"Shut her down already!" Whoa what the hell is going on in this?! Another robot on the loose? Warner Bros has debuted the main official trailer for Companion, a new horror thriller "love story" arriving in theaters in January 2025 at the end of the month. They're still setting this up to be the next new M3gan of the early 2025 season - in more ways than one. "You are cordially invited to experience a new kind of love story." This is produced by the team behind Barbarian, but comes from a director making his first feature film. Starring Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid, Lukas Gage, Megan Suri, Harvey Guillén, with Rupert Friend. Companion is a sci-fi horror movie about a robotic female companion that also might still be human? Or that's what it seems like from this trailer. It's also packed with rave review quotes from critics who got to see an early screening of this last year. I'm in! Gotta see what kind of madness they've been cooking up in here.

The second trailer for the latest sci-fi thriller movie starring Jack Quaid and Sophie Thatcher showcases an AI girlfriend gone haywire.

A trailer for the upcoming sci-fi thriller Companion has just dropped, and it is a stab at showcasing a murderous AI. Here, the AI in question is a jailbroken sex robot. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Quaid, who plays Josh, praises the film, "It was one of the best scripts I've ever read," said Quaid. "I never saw any of the twists coming, but it's not necessarily a movie that relies on a big reveal, and every reveal was fresh."

Companion will be director and writer Drew Hancock's film debut. The starring android Iris, played by Thatcher, was previously known for her roles in Yellow Jackets and The Heretic. The film follows Iris and the "happiest moments of her life." These moments, as stated in a voice-over in the trailer, are "the day she met Josh... and the day she killed him. Thatcher would describe the relationship between Josh and Iris, saying, "This is clearly a very codependent and toxic relationship, and she doesn't know that." In addition to Quaid and Thatcher, the film features performances from Lukas Gage, Megan Suri, Harvey Guillén, and Rupert Friend as Josh's friends.

A New Take on A.I. in Companion
Companion sets itself apart from the typical murder-robot narrative by making the AI, Iris, a sympathetic character. Hancock elaborates by denying similarities to films like M3GAN, saying, "No, this is a robot movie, but it's not like any other robot movie that's out right now.' It's not A.I. gone wrong, it's A.I. gone right." Thatcher went more in-depth into the humanity of Iris: "Iris has really lost herself in the relationship, doesn't really know who she is, and is so eager to please that she doesn't know what she even wants. I think that's a very human thing to feel. You can find yourself, in relationships, being so blindsided to the reality of it because you're just so in love with the person. I mean, she was programmed to be that way, but she can't help it."

Amazon's The Boys has had some explicit and raunchy moments. But they're nothing compared to what the comics has done.

Josh is a far cry from the characters Quaid played in the past. Quaid himself describes his character Josh as someone the audience will root against, stating, "A lesser movie would've probably made my character the protagonist and Iris the antagonist who's going crazy, and Josh has to save the day." Quaid continues, "But I love how this movie is the slightly more realistic version where Josh is doing all of this for very selfish seasons. I love how the character with the most humanity is the robot in this story — it's such a cool turn on several genres."

Companion releases in theaters on January 31st.

Companion will release in theaters on January 31, 2025.

The film marks the directorial debut of Drew Hancock, who also wrote the script.

“The silver lining of showing the audience [that] this is a movie about a robot is it’s a way to kind of get ahead of anyone dismissing it as another robot movie,” Hancock explains to EW today. “Because it’d be so easy to just be like, ‘This is M3GAN,’ or, ‘This is the Megan Fox movie [Subservience].’ It’s a little different to be like, ‘No, this is a robot movie, but it’s not like any other robot movie that’s out right now.’ It’s not A.I. gone wrong, it’s A.I. gone right.”

Rupert Friend (Separation), Harvey Guillén (“What We Do in the Shadows”), Lukas Gage (“You”), Megan Suri (It Lives Inside), and Jack Quaid (Scream, “The Boys”) also star.

Companion has been rated “R” by the MPA for…

“Strong violence, sexual content, and language throughout.”

BoulderLight’s Raphael Margules and J.D. Lifshitz will also produce, along with Vertigo’s Roy Lee. BoulderLight’s Tracy Rosenblum and Vertigo’s Andrew Childs will exec produce.
Gather ‘round for the year of Jack Quaid is upon us. Sure, you’ve known him as Hughie on the Prime Video series, The Boys, since 2019, but 2025 will be Quaid’s year to really shine. And that glow all begins with his upcoming film, Companion, for which a fresh trailer has just dropped. With blossoming scream queen, Sophie Thatcher, who audiences will recognize from Heretic and The Boogeyman, starring opposite Quaid, the unhinged thriller promises to press the pedal to the metal and never ease off the gas until the credits roll.

Penned and helmed by Drew Hancock in his feature-length directorial debut, Companion centers around Iris (Thatcher) and Josh (Quaid), a couple who are going away with some of Josh’s friends to a forested Airbnb-like destination. Things quickly take a turn for the much, much worse when Iris discovers that her boyfriend isn’t the man she thought he was and that she’s been set up for a twisted and sadistic weekend away that could very well end her life.

Quaid and Thatcher aren’t the only blossoming Hollywood stars appearing in Companion, with the movie’s ensemble set to include Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows), Lukas Gage (Smile 2), Megan Suri (The MisEducation of Bindu) and Rupert Friend (Canary Black). The title is the latest to come from J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules, known together as BoulderLight Pictures. The pair previously backed titles such as Becky, The Woman of the Hour, and Barbarian, with the latter’s director, Zach Cregger, also attached to Companion as a producer. Considered one of the best horror movies of the last decade, Barbarian took audiences on a completely unhinged and off-the-rails journey, with Companion expected to do the same.

What Else Does Jack Quaid Have On the Way?

In addition to his chilling role opposite Thatcher in Companion, Quaid is just as busy as his famous parents (Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan) were in the ‘90s. Along with Companion, the Scream alum will also become an action hero this year with the arrival of his film, Novocaine. Helmed by Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, the movie centers around Quaid’s Nathan Caine, a man who can’t feel any pain. After his girlfriend (Amber Midthunder) is kidnapped, he goes off on a mission to bring her back. He’ll just have to remember that, despite not being able to feel pain, he isn’t indestructible. Meanwhile, the actor is booked and busy alongside the rest of the cast of The Boys as they film the fifth and final season of the fan-favorite Prime Video series.

Companion gets a full-length trailer, revealing that the upcoming Jack Quaid horror movie has a surprising sci-fi twist. Directed by Drew Hancock, the horror movie stars Sophie Thatcher as Iris, a woman seemingly facing off against her twisted boyfriend, Josh, who is played by Quaid. The movie hails from the creative team behind Barbarian (2022), a breakout horror hit directed by Zach Creggor.

After a teaser trailer was released in late 2024, Warner Bros now releases a full-length trailer for Companion, revealing the surprising sci-fi twist that Thatcher's Iris is actually a robot. What's more, the trailer opens with a voice-over from Iris, claiming that the two happiest days in her life are the day she met Josh and the day she killed him. Check out the trailer below:

In addition to the trailer, EW also reveals three new images from the movie, one of which features a look at a tense scene between Iris and Josh, while another is a close-up of Iris looking quite formidable. The final image sees Quaid and costar Megan Suri looking shocked at something off-screen. Take a look at the new images below:

Aside from Companion, Quaid will appear in The Boys season 5, and Thatcher will appear in Yellowjackets season 2.

What The Cast & Director Told EW About Companion & Its Sci-Fi Twist
Jack Quaid Teases His Villain Character

The reveals that Iris is a robot and that she kills Josh could be considered major spoilers, but Quaid has stressed that there's more to Companion that's not shown. He tells EW, "It was one of the best scripts I've ever read. I never saw any of the twists coming, but it's not necessarily a movie that relies on a big reveal, and every reveal was fresh." Quaid also praises how the film subverts expectations: "I love how the character with the most humanity is the robot in this story — it's such a cool turn on several genres."

"It's not A.I. gone wrong, it's A.I. gone right."

As for Hancock, though he would have preferred maintaining an aura of mystery about the movie, he admits to EW that it's useful as a way to "sell the movie," but also as a way to win over audiences who may have otherwise written the movie off:

"The silver lining of showing the audience [that] this is a movie about a robot is it's a way to kind of get ahead of anyone dismissing it as another robot movie. Because it'd be so easy to just be like, 'This is M3GAN,' or, 'This is the Megan Fox movie [Subservience].' It's a little different to be like, 'No, this is a robot movie, but it's not like any other robot movie that's out right now.' It's not A.I. gone wrong, it's A.I. gone right."

Speaking specifically about the reveal that Iris is a robot, Hancock says that "The movie doesn't really start until that reveal." What unfolds afterward becomes a journey of "self-discovery," and he describes the film as "a breakup movie about this woman finding empowerment through discovery of self."

What Companion's Sci-Fi Twist Means For The Movie
Will It Be A Success?
Jack Quaid smiling as Josh in Companion
January can sometimes serve as a bit of a dumping ground for movie studios, and a lot of titles released this month don't often make sense as releases for other times of the year. Companion initially looked like a somewhat familiar horror title, but its sci-fi twist immediately separates it from other similar horror movies, such as last year's Cuckoo.

It's not clear what Companion's budget is, but trailers thus far have teased a relatively contained story that was probably not all that expensive to bring to life, meaning it's break-even point at the box office won't be too high. The only other major horror title releasing this month is Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man reboot, but that hits theaters on January 17, meaning Companion should have relatively little competition at the box office. It remains to be seen how audiences response to Companion, but it looks like a unique title in the horror space, which could give it an edge.

After months of intrigue, the full trailer for sheds light on this mysterious horror-thriller produced by Barbarian mastermind Zach Cregger. Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets, The Boogeyman, Heretic) stars as Iris, a seemingly ordinary woman swept off her feet by Jack Quaid’s (The Boys, Scream) charming billionaire, Josh. But their whirlwind romance takes a sinister turn when Iris discovers a shocking truth: she’s a sex robot programmed to fulfil her “partner’s” twisted desires.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, writer-director Drew Hancock, making his feature debut here, revealed that he was initially reluctant to reveal that major plot twist in the trailer but acknowledged the balance required in marketing a film. “The silver lining of showing the audience [that] this is a movie about a robot is it’s a way to kind of get ahead of anyone dismissing it as another robot movie,” he said. He pointed out that Companion is far from the likes of M3GAN or Subservience: “It’s not A.I. gone wrong, it’s A.I. gone right.”Online movie streaming services

The film’s cast also features Lukas Gage (Smile 2), Megan Suri (It Lives Inside), Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows), and Rupert Friend (Asteroid City). The behind-the-scenes team includes cinematographer Eli Born (The Boogeyman), production designer Scott Kuzio (Fear Street), and composer Hrishikesh Hirway (Song Exploder).

Companion is gearing up for its theatrical debut on 30 January in Australia and 31 January in the US.
