The Keys to a Successful New Year's Resolution

We are already a week into the New Year. On January 1st, resolutions were made. Some of those resolutions have already gone by the wayside. Some are struggling to maintain their resolution. And some are still going strong with their resolution. Studies show that 80% of resolutions fail by February. There are many reasons for this. It can be lack of accountability, unrealistic goals, poor planning, distractions, or loss of motivation to name a few.

God's Word provides vital keys to achieving resolutions or any goal.

The first key to seeing a resolution through to success is planning. We read in Proverbs 21:5,

"The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty."

If we jump into a resolution in haste without planning ahead, we will most likely fail. There's a saying that echos the point of this scripture, "Those who fail to plan, plan to fail."

The next key is to surround yourself with the support and experience of others. The wise Solomon teaches us in Proverbs 15:22,

"Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed."

There are people who have already successfully ventured down the path on which we are about to begin. They are aware of the pitfalls and they have acquired wisdom to share. In addition, a mentor or a support team can hold us accountable in achieving our goals and provide encouragement when we need it most.

The final key is to lean on God and entrust all that you do to Him. We read in Proverbs 16:3,

"Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans."

When we fully rely on our human capabilities, we make any goal much more difficult to achieve. As humans, we a very flawed and susceptible to discouragement and defeat. However, if we include God in our plans and goals by relying on Him for wisdom, encouragement, strength and motivation, we will surely succeed. This final key should be the FIRST KEY in all we do.

So whether we have a New Year's Resolution or an ongoing goal that we are pursuing, let us first rely on God as we forge ahead. If we seek God's will and seek His support first, He will give us what we need to succeed, He give us wisdom in our planning and He will lead us to those who can successfully support us. With God all things are possible!
