The POWER of the SIGNET RING in the Book of Esther

The book of Esther is a fascinating one that is full of plot twists. The main plot of this book is Haman's quest to destroy the Jews which begins to unfold in Esther 3.

The King had already made Haman second in command and when Haman approached the King concerning a people who held different customs and did not obey the laws, the King told Haman to do what he pleased with the people. The King then gave Haman the signet ring from his own finger. With this ring, Haman had the power to send out decrees with the seal of the King.

Haman immediately wrote orders sealed with the ring and sent the orders to every province to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews.

In chapter 7, we read that Haman's evil plot did not go as he had planned. When the King learned that his beloved Queen Esther was a Jew and the people whom Haman had targeted were her people, he was furious and had Haman hung.

Then the King made Esther's uncle Mordecai second in command in response to his loyalty to the safety of the King. In addition, the King gave the powerful signet ring to Mordecai granting him the power to issue decrees in the King's name.

In chapter 8, Esther pleaded with the King to overrule the evil decree previously sent out by Haman. The King explained that "no document written in the king's name and sealed with his ring can be revoked". So he instructed Mordecai to write another decree in the king's name in behalf of the Jews as it seemed best to Mordecai and to seal it with the king's signet ring.

Mordecai did so and wrote an edict that granted the Jews in every city the right to protect themselves and to destroy, kill and annihilate those who come to attack them.

There is an amazing parallel to Jesus in the power of the King's signet ring. Originally, satan had the power to kill and destroy all mankind for eternity. However, Jesus came to give us eternal life as he tells us in John 10:10,

"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full."

Jesus came to take that evil power away from satan. Jesus sacrificed his life for the debt of our sins. Through him, God made us alive. Apostle Paul teaches in Colossians 2:13-15,

"He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross."

Jesus disarmed satan. Jesus overcame sin and death on the cross and when he did so, he received the King's signet ring to overrule the previous evil edict that was sealed by satan.

With the King's signet ring, Jesus has given us the power and authority to overcome satan and his minions. Jesus tells us in Luke 10:18-19,

“I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you."

So let us take hold of the power and authority which Jesus has given us through the power of the King's signet ring. It is an edict that cannot be revoked or overruled. It is an eternal edict written and sealed with the triumphant blood of our King Jesus Christ.

The book of Esther ends with a celebration of the Jews' victory over their enemy. We read in chapter 9 that Mordecai instituted the 14th day of the Hebrew month Adar as a day of joy and feasting, a day of giving presents of food to each other and gifts to the poor. This day is called Purim.

Esther 9:27 tells us that the Jews took it on themselves to establish this day and that they and their descendants AND all who join them should continue to observe this day annually throughout all generations to come.

As Purim approaches this week, let us join the Jewish people in their celebration of overcoming evil as we also celebrate the power and authority Jesus has given us to overcome evil and be forever victorious in his name.
