Wolf Man - Official Monsters Workshop Clip (2025) Christopher Abbott, Julia Garner

What if someone you loved became something else?
From Blumhouse and visionary writer-director Leigh Whannell, the creators of the chilling modern monster tale The Invisible Man, comes a terrifying new lupine nightmare: Wolf Man. Golden Globe nominee Christopher Abbott (Poor Things, It Comes at Night) stars as Blake, a San Francisco husband and father, who inherits his remote childhood home in rural Oregon after his own father vanishes and is presumed dead. With his marriage to his high-powered wife, Charlotte (Emmy winner Julia Garner; Ozark, Inventing Anna), fraying, Blake persuades Charlotte to take a break from the city and visit the property with their young daughter, Ginger (Matlida Firth; Hullraisers, Coma).
"I really hope that people will walk away from this film unable to forget the imagery." 😱 Universal has revealed yet another 2-minute behind-the-scenes promo featurette for Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man movie, landing in theaters in just a few more weeks. Ready for a good scare? Produced by Blumhouse, this a fresh update on the classic furry Universal Monster originally invented in the 1941 film The Wolf Man. "What if someone you loved became something else?" What would you do? A man must save himself and his family when they are stalked, terrorized, and haunted by a deadly werewolf at night – but something else is going on with him, too. Christopher Abbott co-stars with Julia Garner and Matilda Firth. This promo video features Leigh and his creature designer named Arjen Tuiten (the prosthetics & special make-up effects designer) discussing making the movie. The focus is on designing the monster and figuring out how to make the prosthetics look real and very unsettling. The anecdote about how the entire crew was scared by the full-on prosthetics is awesome - I dig this kind of hype. Wolf Man hits theaters soon - catch it on the big screen.

Christopher Abbott stars as Blake, a San Francisco husband and father, who inherits his remote childhood home in rural Oregon after his own father vanishes and is presumed dead. With his marriage to his high-powered wife, Charlotte (Julia Garner), fraying, Blake persuades her to take a break from the city and visit the property with their daughter, Ginger (Matlida Firth). But as the family approaches the farmhouse in the dead of night, they’re attacked by an unseen animal and, in a desperate escape, they barricade themselves inside the home as the creature prowls the perimeter. As the night stretches on, however, Blake begins to behave strangely, transforming into something unrecognizable, and Charlotte will be forced to decide whether the terror within their house is more lethal than the danger without. Wolf Man is directed by acclaimed Australian filmmaker Leigh Whannell, director of the films Insidious: Chapter 3, Upgrade, and The Invisible Man previously; writer for the Saw series, Dead Silence, The Mule. The screenplay is written by Leigh Whannell & Corbett Tuck, Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo. Inspired by the 1941 classic The Wolf Man. Produced by Jason Blum (and executive produced by Ryan Gosling!). Universal will debut Whannell's Wolf Man movie in theaters nationwide starting on January 17th, 2025 early next year.
Wolf Man's gory practical effects get a detailed look in a new video from Leigh Whannell's upcoming horror movie. Co-written and directed by Whannell – also known for Saw, Insidious, and 2020's The Invisible Man – the upcoming horror movie is a reboot of the classic 1941 film, following a family man who moves into his inherited childhood home and is attacked by a werewolf during a full moon, leading to his terrifying transformation that endangers his wife and daughter. Wolf Man's cast includes Christopher Abbott in the titular role alongside Julia Garner, Matilda Firth, and more.

Now, shared by Universal Pictures, a new behind-the-scenes video provides a detailed look at the gory practical effects in the upcoming Wolf Man. The video features co-writer–director Leigh Whannell and special make-up effects designer Arjen Tuiten explaining why practical effects were the right choice for the film, along with its stars Julia Garner and Matilda Firth's first reactions to seeing Christopher Abbott in full make-up. Check out the video below:

What Wolf Man's Gory Practical Effects Mean For The Movie
Leigh Whannell Took A Different Approach

In the new behind-the-scenes video, co-writer and director Leigh Whannell discusses his "very different" visual approach to the Wolf Man reboot. Instead of trying to top Jack Pierce, Stan Winston, and Rick Baker's make-up for past iterations, Whannell decided to take his reboot in a completely different direction, inspired by the body horror of John Carpenter's The Thing and David Cronenberg's The Fly. The result was, as makeup artist Arjen Tuiten puts it, one of the scariest things he's ever seen.

Everything We Know About Universal’s 2025 Wolf Man Remake Director Leigh Whannell’s New Take.

Based on the partial looks seen in the BTS video and the Wolf Man trailer, Christopher Abbott's titular monster doesn't seem to have the same hairy appearance as Lon Chaney Jr.'s portrayal in the original 1941 film, with a renewed emphasis on creating a more realistic look through practical effects. The trailer has already teased a more monstrous transformation, showing Abbott's character gradually becoming more animalistic. Given the success of Leigh Whannell's The Invisible Man, his changes to Wolf Man should also reinvent the classic Universal Monster in a new and interesting way.

Our Take On Wolf Man's Practical Effects
Why They're So Effective

Wolf Man's use of practical effects is very different from the original 1941 film, which relied on much simpler, albeit groundbreaking techniques for its time. Leigh Whannell's reboot embraces modern craftsmanship, creating a more visceral and terrifying transformation with tangible effects. Practical effects often evoke more authentic audience reactions than CGI by providing a physical presence on set, as seen in Julia Garner and Matilda Firth's first reactions to seeing Christopher Abbott in make-up, grounding its primary performances and enhancing the overall realism of Wolf Man.

Wolf Man releases in theaters on January 17.

Wolf Man is an upcoming American horror film directed and co-written by Leigh Whannell. The seventh installment of The Wolf Man franchise, it stars Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner. Jason Blum and Ryan Gosling are producers, the former for Blumhouse Productions.

The film was announced in 2014 and was to be part of a shared cinematic universe centered on the Universal Monsters; Aaron Guzikowski and David Callaham were attached to pen the script. After the failure of The Mummy (2017), Universal shifted its focus to standalone films. The success of Whannell's The Invisible Man (2020) rekindled Universal's interest in the Monsters franchise. They accepted a pitch by Gosling, who was also set to star, for a new Wolf Man film with Derek Cianfrance to direct. However, Gosling dropped out of the role and Cianfrance left the project in 2023, while Whannell took over as director. Filming took place in New Zealand in early 2024.

Wolf Man is set to be released by Universal Pictures on January 17, 2025.

In July 2014, Universal Pictures announced its plan for a shared cinematic franchise, later dubbed Dark Universe, centered on their Universal Monsters library — which was to include The Wolf Man.[3][4] In November 2014, Aaron Guzikowski was confirmed to be writing the reboot of Universal's The Wolf Man.[5][6] In June 2016, Deadline Hollywood reported on rumors that Dwayne Johnson was considered for the titular role.[7] In October, David Callaham was hired to rewrite the script.[8] In 2017, The Mummy was released as the first film in the Dark Universe; its launch was both a critical and commercial failure and resulted in Universal deciding to shift its focus on individual storytelling and move away from the shared universe concept with the cancelation of The Wolf Man and other films in development.[9]

The success of Whannell's previous monster film inspired Universal to make Wolf Man.
Reporter Justin Kroll said the critical and commercial success of Leigh Whannell's The Invisible Man for Universal "scrap[ped] the universe concept" and loosened restrictions for the talent in front and behind the camera, allowing them to decide how they wanted to execute their films in terms of budget and MPAA rating and invite "big name talent" to pitch their ideas.[10] By early 2020, Universal had been hearing project ideas for a year and a half from filmmakers seeking to develop other characters in the franchise. These meetings included Ryan Gosling's pitch to remake The Wolf Man and star in it, with Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo writing a screenplay described as tonally similar to Nightcrawler (2014).[10] Around this time, make-up artist Mike Marino molded an early version of the werewolf.[11] Several filmmakers were considered to direct, including Cory Finley, whose film Thoroughbreds (2017) was reportedly well liked by Universal, and Whannell, who was advised by Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions (producer of several of his projects, including The Invisible Man) to reconsider after initially declining.[10][12] (In February 2020, Whanell had mentioned his interest in making a werewolf film during a press interview for The Invisible Man.)[13] Whannell entered negotiations to write a film treatment and direct.[12]

After Whannell left the project due to scheduling conflicts, Derek Cianfrance entered negotiations to write and direct in October 2021, having directed Gosling in Blue Valentine (2010) and The Place Beyond the Pines (2012).[14] The film was officially green lit around the conclusion of the 2023 Hollywood strikes.[15] In December, Cianfrance and Gosling were reported to have exited the project due to scheduling conflicts, with Whannell returning to take over directing in addition to writing the screenplay with his wife, Corbett Tuck, while Cianfrance received off-screen additional literary material credit.[16][17][18] Gosling, who retained an executive producer credit, was replaced by Christopher Abbott in the lead role.[16] During pre-production, Whannell hosted weekly film screenings for his crew, with selections such as Amour (2012); he noted that the film's first draft was written in 2020, pulling from the feeling of confinement and isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic to touch on the inevitability of illness and death, and making the drama "intimate" by setting it primarily in one location.[11][19] In 2024, Julia Garner, Sam Jaeger, and Matilda Firth joined the cast.[20][21][22] Principal photography began in New Zealand on March 17, 2024, with cinematographer Stefan Duscio.[23] Arjen Tuiten was the film's prosthetics designer and makeup artist.[19] Whannell compiled a list of werewolf designs, such as those portrayed by Lon Chaney in the original The Wolf Man (1941) and David Naughton in An American Werewolf in London (1981), along with those included in The Howling (1981) and Dog Soldiers (2002), before settling on one; he was inspired by Heath Ledger's take on the Joker in forming an original design for an established character. Whannell went with Tuiten's first design of the werewolf, which Tuiten first showed him by making a life-sized model.[24]

Marketing
In August 2024, during Universal's Halloween Horror Nights in Orlando, a booth revealed the film's logo and teaser image, and on September 4, an actor took the stage for a photo-op performing as the film's werewolf. The werewolf design—a creature with a "balding head", "long white hair on the back of his head and as facial hair", "long, bony fingers", and "sharp teeth"—drew divisive reactions from online users and journalists.[a] On September 6, Universal released a teaser trailer, poster, and synopsis.[30] Hannah Shaw-Williams of /Film suggested that the timing of the teaser's release was "damage control" over the poorly-received werewolf design, noting the absence of the titular creature in the teaser.[31] Whannell described the design reveal as a "debacle", as Universal did it without discussing it with him or contacting the film's make-up artist, Arjen Tuiten; he unsuccessfully tried stopping it by calling Jason Blum and later retorted that it was "like judging the Freddy Krueger makeup by a costume at Spirit Halloween."[15] On January 6th, Universal sponsored "The Complete History of The Wolf Man' as an episode of Horror History from horror Youtuber CZsWorld.

Release
Wolf Man is scheduled to be released in the United States on January 17, 2025.[32] It was previously scheduled to be released on October 25, 2024.[16]
