The Lincoln Project’s Horn: Trump’s Rhetoric on Panama Canal, Greenland Is ‘Dangerous’

ALCINDOR: “And Jennifer, I want to come to you because I covered the first Trump Administration. He would talk about the Panama Canal, talk about Greenland. What do you think is behind this?”
HORN: “I think Donald Trump has a very Putin-esque view of the world and of America’s position in the world. And, you know, while I’m as big a supporter as anybody of maintaining the strength and the security of our country, to the former gentleman’s point, these properties are not for sale. I think that there is, you know, kind of a sense that — Donald Trump likes to be the big man, the — you know, the tough guy. We’re going to do this. We’re going to do that. I think it feeds his supporters, you know, the image that his supporters have of him. Don’t forget, he also wants to annex Canada as our 51st state. And if you see the way that he talks about Puerto Rico, as a Canadian, you know, I think Canadians would probably be very concerned about that. But this is just — this is — it’s hard to know — and this is part of what makes Donald Trump so dangerous — it’s hard to know if this is just him being himself and spouting off, or if he’s laying the groundwork for trying to take some actions that’ll be very, very dangerous and create a tremendous amount of chaos in the world, or is this just another case of Elon Musk acting as puppeteer, pulling the strings behind the scenes, telling Trump what to say, because he thinks there’s something to be gained from this. But it is absolutely — it’s — it’s dangerous rhetoric, it creates chaos, and it has the threat of damaging some very important relationships that we have around the world.”
