After the fall of Bashar al-Assad, mass grave sites continue to be uncovered in Syria, including one near the Sayyeda Zainab Shrine, a revered site for Shia Muslims south of Damascus. The area, reportedly controlled by Iranian-backed fighters, was used to conceal decomposing bodies in facilities such as a former medicine warehouse. Civil defence teams have recovered 20 unidentified bodies in various states of decay and are conducting DNA tests to help families achieve closure. The site highlights the atrocities committed under Assad's regime, with international estimates indicating up to 150,000 people remain missing. Once a propaganda tool for sectarian militias, the shrine is now being protected as a symbol of unity under the new administration
