presents episode 2372 | SHAWN BAKER w/Kirk Parsley

Purpose of sleep? to repair from the day's activities...
-everything we do in the day is catabolic
-go to gym, get weaker, at night, get stronger
-sleep repairs everything, then prepares for the day's activities
When aligned with circadian rhythm:
First go to sleep: Deep Sleep
-stage 1, 2, then
-stage 3, 4: deep sleep
over time: stair step out: 3, 2, 1, then
REM sleep, the back down to 1
This is 1 sleep cycle (90-120 min)

First sleep cycle is mostly deep sleep, most anabolic time of life...
-lowest stress hormones (required for sleep)
-all hormones measured by hypothalamus, then pituitary secretes
needed hormones [example testosterone, growth, thyroid]
-also affects leptin, ghrelin
Also repairing everything at same time
Glial cells contract 30%, allows CSF to
flow through [glymphatic system] to
flush out waste products
-reset anabolic rate

Then into REM sleep: more cognitive and emotional...
-rehearse everything heard, said, and thought during day
-if needed, will attach to existing info
-if not needed, will be trimmed off
-then emotionally categorized events
[perhaps where PTSD is an issue]
-if don't sleep well...then these events,
while small, are not resolved
Progress through night: more & more
REM and less deep sleep
miss early: no anabolic support
miss late: no REM emotional support
