"I was a fat kid, began dieting at age 10, continued being
overweight until 15 years ago"
-was 40 pounds heavier than now
-high BP & pre-diabetic
-ate by the food pyramid--did not work
-so, exercised more--did not work
-began to Look Like The Pyramid

Had tumor at base of brain 24 years ago
-trying to do right thing for health
-on chemo therapy
Heard that metformin was effective on aggressive cancers...
"Thought--metformin reduces sugar; cancer likely needs
sugar, so why not just reduce sugar?"
Began researching sugar
-patients were overwhelmingly more &
more obese; poorer immunity; poorer
outcomes

As surgeon for most T2D foot surgeries in Northern
Tasmania--suddenly, clinic was overrun with these
Began teaching patients about dangers of sugar
-40 year old patient, in danger of having legs amputated...
-lost one leg; had out of control blood glucose
-noticed: he was eating ice cream!
-asked, Why??
-Answer: they told me I can
"Actually part of Australian Guidelines:
optional for patients to have ice cream
3X a day, plus carbs all day long"

I hope no one gets to operate on T2D patients' feet and
limbs...
-legs are amputated due to neuropathy, infection in bone,
due to long term complications of T2D
-it's a microvascular disease: every vessel becomes narrow
-every tissue loses its oxygen supply
-nerves not working, so cannot feel
-then, injury leads to infection
Cannot Feel it; Inability to Heal it

Often on diets that spike blood glucose...
-low in protein & micronutrients
-no healthy fats
Same degradation process is happening in kidneys,
eyes, and brain
