Apostolic succession has different meanings in different Christian branches. Here's a breakdown of the different views:

Catholic and Orthodox View:

Affirm Apostolic Succession: The Roman Catholic Church, as well as the Eastern Orthodox Church, believes in the need of apostolic succession for the coalescing of the church's authority and dominion. They assert that there is a direct line of successors with ordination powers being the bishops. It is held as succession that makes it possible to guard the original teaching and sacraments of the church.

Anglican View: Middle Position. Including the “high church” branches, the Anglican Church recognizes and practices a form of apostolic succession. The Anglicans believe the bishops are in an unbroken line; however, they subordinate this line to the church’s legitimacy as Catholic or Orthodox does. It is viewed as a component of the historical development of the church rather than a doctrinal prerequisite.

Protestant View: As for most of the Protestant denominations, apostolic succession is not considered an essential believer’s authorising doctrine. They believe in the priesthood of all Christians which is supported by the Holy Spirit. Such protestants believe that the authority that they have comes from the Bible as well as the spiritual enthusiasm that God has for his chosen people and not a system of ordination.

Pentecostal and Non-Denominational View: Apostolic succession is not a concept which many Pentecostal and non-denominational churches subscribe to as a formal ideal. The Holy Spirit holds the keys to leadership and as such, there is no need for biological ancestry. Billing quite an achievable standard of ministry, apostolic succession is not invoked often within church administrative matters.

There seems to exist a variety of views regarding apostolic succession. It is reconfirmed in the traditional churches such as Romanian Catholicism and Eastern Orthodox religions while most of the protestant and evangelist traditions such as PTM do not believe in it but focus more on the calling and the scripture authority.
