Woodward Says Netanyahu’s Prolonging War to Stay out of Jail, Colbert Retorts ‘Can You Imagine a Politician Doing Anything He Could...’

COLBERT: “ — about Netanyahu. So what is he hiding from the rest of us? What’s the real feeling he has?”
WOODWARD: “Well, he tells to the associates, he said some things I can’t use on the air here.”
COLBET: “I can. And he said, ‘He’s a bad [bleep] guy. That’s what he’s quoted as saying about — “
WOODWARD: “Yeah. I mean, he’s very angry at Netanyahu.”
COLBERT: “What makes him angriest?”
WOODWARD: “What makes him angriest is that he can’t control Netanyahu, and the war has — it’s escalated in the last month, and it is something that Biden can’t control. And Netanyahu’s gonna do what he wants to do, not just for what he deems in Israel’s interests, but the prime minister’s. I mean, he’s under indictment, he’s hanging by his political fingers and die, so he is conducting the war, not just in the interests of Israel, but in his own political interests.”
COLBERT: “To stay out of jail.”
WOODWARD: “Stay out of jail.”
COLBERT: “Can you imagine a politician doing anything they could to stay out of jail? Well, okay, if that’s the case, if he thinks that Netanyahu may not be, say, an honest broker of what’s best for Israel or is doing — is not actually working toward a peaceful solution in this case, why does he support him so publicly?”
WOODWARD: “Well, because the there is an alliance, goes way back, between Israel and the United States, it’s an important alliance. And Biden has decided, ‘Look, we’re gonna support Israel, good reasons, good strategic reasons, but I’m not gonna be pro-Netanyahu.’ And so they’re — you know, it’s one of these relationships that’s very, very tense. I mean, what — “
COLBERT: “He did hug him. I mean, he did literally go over there and literally hug him, right?”
WOODWARD: “Yes.”
COLBERT: “Okay. That seems supportive.”
WOODWARD: “Yeah. I don’t know. You’ve seen the picture, it was what we call a reluctant hug.”
(Laughter)
COLBERT: “What — “
WOODWARD: “You’ve seen those. We’ve all done them.”
COLBERT: “Yeah, yeah. But only once. You only do it once because I never want to hug that person again.”
