2 dead as weakened and ‘weird’ Typhoon Krathon slams into Taiwan

Typhoon Krathon, a weakened Category 1 storm, hit southwestern Taiwan on Thursday, causing two deaths, grounding hundreds of flights, and closing financial markets for a second day.

The storm made landfall near Kaohsiung, bringing strong winds and heavy rain, prompting warnings for residents to stay indoors.

Kaohsiung’s mayor urged people to avoid dangerous conditions. Two fatalities occurred on Taiwan’s east coast, and the island saw significant rainfall and landslides.

The typhoon is expected to weaken into a tropical depression as it moves northward toward Taipei, NBC News has reported.
