presents episode 2183 | DR PHILIP OVADIA

Blood tests do not reveal heart disease, they reveal risk
factors for heart disease...
CAC [coronary artery calcium] score reveals heart disease
CAT scan of arteries of heart: looks for evidence of plaque
-specifically calcified plaque
Primary heart disease factor from physiological perspective
is IR
Every study: comparing IR to cholesterol
level for PREDICTING heart disease:
IR is 10X more powerful predictor

CAC score?
If non-zero score: you want to stop that score from getting
larger: a low-fat, low cholesterol diet is NOT THE ANSWER
-controling IR IS THE ANSWER
-low carb eating is the best approach, including carnivore
-red meat in diet should not be feared
Red meat by itself has been shown Not to be a risk factor
for heart disease
[red meat in combo meal with fries/chips,
soda, bun, seed oils--that is a risk factor]

IR tests? Yes, can tell the presence and the progression of
heart disease...
Example: TG/HDL ratio, should be less than 1.5
-greater than 2 means likely IR
Fasting Insulin Level is better: HOMA-IR score
-online calculator for insulin/glucose greater than 2 = IR
Better: LPIR score [lipoprotein IR] checks the
SIZE OF CHOLESTEROL PARTICLES

Dr Bill Cromwell discovered working in reverse:
-check SIZE of cholesterol particles to determine IR
-LPIR is best practical way to check IR
Gold standard for checking IR: Kraft test
-drink gluocse; then measure insulin & glucose every 30 min
for 3 hours
-but, not practical any more

Best IR test today? LPIR
