PSAKI: “Don, I can’t wait to talk about your book. It looks so good and so interesting, as was your first one. I do have to ask you about news of the day because you’re here with me. So let me just start by asking you about this sort of back and forth. I mean, I strongly feel that the Harris team pushing to unmute Trump’s mics is smart. What do you think?”
LEMON: “I think it’s smart as well. By the way, thank you for inviting me on, Jen. I really appreciate it. I think it is really smart. You know how they say, sunlight is the best disinfectant. I wish I had something witty to say about audio as well. But I think we should hear exactly what Donald Trump is saying and how he is treating a woman on stage as she is speaking, because he is perplexed now. I think he’s found himself in a situation that he’s not used to finding himself in, and that is answering to a very smart woman. And in this particular case, he is answering to a black woman. I think that he’s on his heels now. He doesn’t know how to respond to her. He was hoping that he would be going up against the President Joe Biden, and now he’s going up against this black woman, and she’s found all this popularity, and she’s closing the polls, tightening the polls, and he doesn’t know what to do. He’s losing his mind. And I think the Harris campaign knows on that stage he is prone to, you know, have a fit and — and say something that’ll get him in trouble.”
PSAKI: “You — you’ve interviewed him a number of times. You’ve covered him for years. I mean, one of the things that struck me about Vice President Harris, regardless of people’s politics out there, is that she knows how to command a stage — she showed that at the convention. She’s quite compelling on television. Do you think that’s one of the things that gets under his skin?”
LEMON: “Well, I think there’s a lot about her that gets under his skin. I think because, you know, he’s — again, he’s not used to going up against smart women. He’s used to sort of being in charge and — and having, you know, guys lead the way. But, look, I think that anyone who calls him out on his BS, I think that anyone who doesn’t back down to him, I think is a — a problem. And I think that he — you know, he understands that the world after this convention has many people in America, they have fallen in love with Kamala Harris. There’s momentum coming out of this debate for her, and he wants to slow that momentum down. I think that’s one reason that he had RFK out, you know, just days after the convention, out on the stump and having him, you know, endorse him so publicly is because he’s trying to steal the spotlight back. He doesn’t know — his campaign does not know what to do with a Kamala Harris campaign. And Jen, I feel like he’s — he’s running a campaign from a time gone by. I’ve been saying this a lot on my show. I feel like this is a 2024 version of Willie Horton, and that they’re running this negative campaign. And I don’t think anyone is buying it. Maybe the folks in the hard right MAGA part of the party, they’re buying it, but people, as I went across the country, told me they’re sick of the vitriol, they’re sick of the negativity. And this act is — is wearing thin. It’s old.”
