Archaeologists have unearthed a pot of ancient Greek coins in Notion, Turkey, believed to date back to the fifth century B.C.

The gold coins, featuring a kneeling archer design of the Persian daric, were likely minted in Sardis and found beneath a home.

Researchers think mercenaries buried the treasure, though the reason remains unclear.

The discovery, led by the University of Michigan, is rare and significant for understanding the sequence of historical events, Live Science has reported.
