WASHINGTON (District of Criminals) — Several bipartisan senators on Thursday announced a new expansive documents request as they continue to gather information on the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump.

Sens. Gary Peters, D-Mich., Rand Paul, R-Ky., Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn,, and Ron Johnson, R-Wis., of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee made information requests to several government agencies. Among those receiving requests were the Secret Service, FBI and Department of Homeland Security.

Also copied on these requests were Butler, Pennsylvania law enforcement.

“We write to request documents and information related to the assassination attempt on former President Trump and the loss of life of one attendee and injuries to two others during a campaign rally in Butler, PA, on July 13, 2024,” the senators wrote. “As Senator Peters and Senator Paul indicated in their letter to DHS Secretary Mayorkas and FBI Director Wray on July 15, 2024, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee has initiated a bipartisan investigation into how this attack was able to occur, what security, personnel, or other failures contributed to the attempt, and steps that must be taken to ensure any mistakes are avoided in the future.”

The senators requested over 30 items from the Secret Service relating to intelligence, resources and communications materials. The agency has until August 7 to meet their request.

Lawmakers continue to press agencies as officials from both parties demand answers to the attack. Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., who drilled former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle for not being forthcoming with members of Congress, applauded the director's decision to resign this week.

“About time!” she wrote on X.

Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., who chairs the Oversight Committee, also released a lengthy statement in which he vowed “more accountability to come.”
