Patriot Minute: Frederick Douglass, American Patriot

Frederick Douglass was an escaped slave who became a speaker, celebrated author, and passionate advocate for abolition, Black equality, and women's suffrage. He also recruited over 200,000 black soldiers and sailors, which would make up about 10% of the Union Army, playing a critical role in the defeat of the Democrat-run Confederate South and their slave holders.

Through a lifetime of effort, this great American patriot worked tirelessly to secure the ideals espoused in the Declaration of Independence for all Americans.

Douglass never smiled in any photographs because he felt it inappropriate until all slaves were freed. One of my favorite quotes by him is:
"It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men."
