This covered film releases, theme park events and updates, Disney Channel projects and more. These installments center around Walt Disney picture's 26th animated feature The Great Mouse Detective. The film started under the Ron Miller administration and many animation staff jumped ship on The Black Cauldron to work on it. When the Eisner regime took over the Walt Disney Company they greenlit the film since they had to pay the staff either way. The film was originally to be called Basil of Baker Street but Jeffery Katzenberg changed the title when the Steve Spielberg film Young Sherlock Holmes bombed. It was believe anything tying in with Sherlock Holmes was box office poison. This is the first animated feature to be co-directed by Ron Clemons and John Musker. They would become Disney's most successful directors later directing The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Treasure Planet, Moana, and others. When the film was a release it was a modest success and the Disney Animation Studio was on its way to reestablish itself in the industry and American culture. These segments feature some behind the scenes footage on the making of the film. At the time, such footage was rare and because this film isn't one of the A-list releases, it's been rarely seen. Star Tours was the first ever Star Wars theme park attraction ever built. In the 1970’s there has been discussions to build a Star Wars themed roller coaster featuring audio animatronics of the characters. Riders would decide if they would choose the light side or the dark side of the force. In the mock up most chose the dark side three to one to see the villains so the idea was scrapped and eventually evolved into Star Tours. Star Tours was rooted in a concept for an unrealized attraction based on the Walt Disney Productions’ film The Black Hole. When the film bombed plans ceased. The technology was later adapted for the theme park attraction Captain EO. Star Wars creator George Lucas collaborated on that attraction and allowed for a Star Wars version to proceed. Beauty & the Beast was originally intended to be Walt Disney Pictures' first animated feature produced with a european director. This came out of the production experience of Who Framed Roger Rabbit. When that production didn't work out, the project was brought stateside and Howard Ashman & Alan Menken were brought in to make the film into a musical. Upon release, Beauty & the Beast was the most critically acclaimed and financially successful animated feature ever released up to that time. It was showered with awards and is the only hand drawn film to have ever been nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award. This segment focuses on the voice cast of the film. This segment focuses on the original creation of the film as well as the restoration. We hear from Disney Legends who worked on the film such as Ward Kimball, Frank Thomas, and Ken Anderson (in what may be his final ever interview) as well as modern Disney animators such as Glen Keane. Pinocchio's film negative suffered severe water damage so until digital technology all restorations had issues with them. This was the last theatrical release for the film. Aladdin was a project that was originally brought to Disney by Howard Ashman where he and writing partner Alan Menken created a story and score. Studio chief Jeffery Katzenberg paused the production asking the pair to work on Beauty & the Beast as the story was revamped. The Little Mermaid's co-directors Ron Clemons and John Musker developed Aladdin into their next film but Ashman was dying of AIDS as the film went into production. Clemons and Musker would become Disney's most successful directors later directing Hercules, Treasure Planet, Moana, and others. When Aladdin was released it was the most successful animated feature ever released up to that time. Robin Williams' performance of the Genie was especially praised. This would lead to more A-list celebrities to be cast in animated features for marquee value over more traditional voice actors. This practice continues to this day. The Disney Legends Awards were established in 1987 as an official Hall of Fame to honor people who have contributed to the Walt Disney Studios and made a significant impact to its legacy. The first inductee was actor Fred MacMurray whom Walt always cast in roles that he most identified with himself. In 1989 the Disney Legends Awards became an annual event recognizing many of the people Walt had collaborated with when he was alive. Blue ribbon award winners are the figures who have posthumously received the award. The awards used to be held annually until 2009 (coincidentally the year Roy Disney, Jr passed away?) and now they're awarded every other year. In recent years, the Disney Legends Awards moved away from people who've actually contributed to Walt Disney History and began to include figures who'd contributed to the franchises Bob Iger acquired. The Awards also began being used as a publicity stunt of the latest stars or projects rather than focusing on Walt Disney history as intended. There are many people who were instrumental in building the Walt Disney Studios when Walt was alive or afterward that have never been honored as an official Disney Legend yet Marvel and Star Wars stars have as well as the cast of The View. Recipients also used to be inducted with their number into this Hall of Fame but in 2022 that practice was abandoned with all inductees of the year being assigned the same number because of "equity." This is symbolic of what the awards have become as a whole. In 2017 Muppeteer Steve Whitmire alleged that when the Walt Disney Company fired him they offered to honor him as a Disney Legend in exchange for a nondisclosure agreement to which he declined. Since then, others have speculated that some Disney Legends inductees are only made because of this same bargain to silence them on Disney history. When the Disney Channel started they always aired a regular segment between films called Dateline Disney that focused on the latest events happening with the Walt Disney Company. Beauty & the Beast was the first Disney animated feature adapted into a Broadway production. This practice has become commonplace. When it opened, Beauty & the Beast was a huge commercial success but shunned by the elites and shunned from the Tonys. It ultimately won other awards and became the tenth longest running show in Broadway history. The show ran from 1994 through 2007.
