Philip had declared himself bankrupt and did not pay his army in the Netherlands. The Royal troops then began plundering, and the 17 states united to fight against the Spanish King.

The Dutch had rebelled against their Lord, King Philip II of Spain and started a war. Ultimately, seven rebel states formed a union and showed their Lord the door. Some wanted to replace him with a French Prince, others with Prince William of Orange. Both Princes died in 1584. King Philip thought that everything would return to normal. However, the Dutch continued their disobedience, but now they really needed to find a sovereign to rule them.
