23 mm NEMA17 12v 1A Stepper Motor Powering Compass Magnet Motor

We attempt to get the compass magnet motor to run using a NEMA17 12v 1A 200 step motor and learn quite a bit.
First it can't turn a load with 9v and second 250 RPM, which is easily achieved without a load, is too much to hope for with a load.
The best we could get it to do was 60 RPM, that is the setting on the NEMA17 motor, and that with a fairly fresh set of 8 AAA batteries.
It ran for about 2 minutes at 60 RPM before the batteries were too weak. Then we set it at a much lower speed and it ran for about 10 minutes and more but we turned it off.
So if you were planning on powering a NEMA17 motor with only 9v that's great if it's just going to turn a paper pointer but not much else.
We are considering using more than 8 batteries and possibly getting higher RPMs out of the NEMA17.

Stay tuned:)
