Chemical-Free Gardening in a Woods (Spring Non-Toxic Garden Tour)

Non-Toxic Home
(TONS of links below!!!) Sometimes you have to make compromises to grow food! I never wanted to use landscape fabric in the garden, and I do really prefer the no-til method, but every location has different challenges and thus there is no one-size-fits-all approach to successful gardening.
Don’t believe the Rockefeller robots, who typically have no more than a few potted plants!
Life happens and we must respond accordingly.
Correction: Obviously, I meant that it was the end of April, not May. Silly, silly.
Also, I interrupted myself and meant to say that Dave doesn’t tolerate yarrow, and I don’t use it myself much. So out it goes.
As the environment changes, so must our gardening strategies.

Old man trail pt 4 - final touches and discussion

Permaculture
Here we finish the old man trail with an expansion of the paw paw area, going thicker there, and extending it to the circle garden. We also expand the southern section and make a new path there also. Approx 300 more bags. My back it telling me that's enough for the year.
Then we discuss strategic bag location - shredded vs non-shredded, and why we put them in various places. This last video is going to act as a segue into a sheet mulching comprehensive guide video that is coming up next - in 2 days.
After that we have a hugelkulture video, and a giant compost pile - a next level compost pile. That's right - we did 4 videos this weekend! They are coming every 2 days this week!

Grass to Hugelkulture Bed - lets make a wood core bed.

Permaculture
What do you do when you have a small wooded area with lots of fallen branches and dead wood, three horses that poop a lot and a desire for raised garden beds? You build a Hugelkultur garden. Hugelkultur, pronounced Hoo-gul-culture, means hill culture or hill mound.
It is a raised garden bed that is built from the bottom up with logs, sticks and branches, wood chips, grass clippings, manure, leaves, food scraps, egg shells, coffee grounds… everything you would put into a compost heap. Top it all off with a layer of topsoil and/or more compost and you are ready to plant.
The way it works is that as the wood decays it retains moisture and supplies nutrients to the mound. The decaying wood provides a home to the beneficial soil bugs that help break down organic matter. In the first few years the soil will warm from the decay going on so your growing season will be longer too. It can work in the desert as well as an urban backyard. It also is a great way to use dead and fallen trees that otherwise would get burned or go to a landfill.
Ideally we do not use Juglans species due to the juglone (although as long as no husks are used, it's probably fine longterm), and we try not to use fungal resistant woods such as locust and cedar, because the goal is for the wood to break down as quickly as possible. They can still be used, but the bed will just kind of sit there and do nothing for longer.
These beds can be a bit of a gimmick in my opinion - at least as far as people exaggerate how amazing they are. They are still great beds, but they just aren't the second coming. They CAN be, but it takes longer than people are willing to admit, and in that meantime you may be fighting a weed battle. They are also not ideal beds for growing greens (as people often use them for), but rather as a fungal dominated soil bed - you got it, they are TREE beds.
The bacterial to fungal transition will happen over time, more and more. So grow your pumpkins and squash in them in the first few seasons as the manure and compost remains bacterial dominated. But over time the bed will get more and more fungal, and you really want to transition it over to shrubs and trees.
Also, it's better to build these over a few months and not all at once, because they will settle. They need to be topped up regularly at first. After that, you can sow a nitrogen fixing cover into them like clover, cowpea, vetch, etc. This helps because the soil will be nitrogen depleted for a few years, due to all that buried wood.

Must see Permaculture Food Forest and resilient lifestyle

Permaculture
Contact info: Pierre Moreault
P.JMoreault@gmail.com
https://www.architecturalrestorationcanada.com/
You can contact Pierre for metal work, parts, restoration, refurbishment, food, honey, syrup, to make a barn, or a rabbit/chicken/sheep tractor, to rent his room and stay with him, learn from him, etc.
Please respect him, his talent, his privacy, and his kindness.
This visit left me with 4 hours of raw footage, and I condensed it down as much as possible into 50+ minutes. The amount of pure gold in this video was incredible:
- Food Forests
- Greenhouses (multiple designs)
- Chickens, Goats, Rabbits, Sheep, Geese, and their various tractor systems
- Annual Beds (Raised beds, soil beds)
- Bees
- Incubation
- Storage, grain sprouting, flour, sourdough, kombucha, kimchi, kefir (some of this was cut)
- Hugelkulture
- Ponds (which all got removed because the audio was so windy)
- Philosophical discussion on: Sustainability, Energy, Collapse, Manufacturing, Industry, the future, where we are going, and why this lifestyle isn't sustainable.
- Life simplification, so that we can repair and reuse things.
- Energy consideration in our diets, in our purchases
- Dumpster diving and tapping into waste streams
I literally mean it when I say this guy is the epitome of a living breathing walking and talking example of what humanity needs to survive. What Pierre doesn't shouldn't be abnormal. It never was. It's only abnormal today, in our civilization design of unsustainability. Pierre's lifestyle design should be the definition of what a normal lifestyle looks like.
I hope you enjoy. He is a true inspiration.
We all get bombarded with information about the Kardashians and celebrities and what they do and how they live, but nobody will ever hear about a guy like Pierre. So I thought I would change that. Lets all change that, and tell your friends about this video, and about him, and about what normal should look like.

Gardening by the almanac. Does it work? How do you do it? We all have questions about this topic related to gardening.
We use natural gardening techniques to build a diverse natural ecosystem in the gardens. Slowly replacing common species, with perennial food producing species.
I will read a brief introduction to the almanac and provide important gardening dates related to the almanac.
Have questions? Drop me a comment during the video, or send me an email.
What to see how permaculture and food forest work? This is a very young food forest. Foundation tree plantings are still happening. This year we will focus on establishing our new fruit trees, and removing the unproductive or undesirable nuisance plants. Working with nature and its natural cycles.
Zone 7A/8B we are in a boundary zone micro climate on the banks of a seasonal creek. Expanding the food production, natural ecosystems that will blend food production, medicinals, and aesthetic plantings. To support bees, butterflies, and all the beautiful life on this garden.
