Lastly, for fun I worked on some gymnastics. First I used my bands to do a minute of pushdowns to warm up my elbows.

After that, I did several rounds of handstand holds, for a minimum of 30 seconds each. The “trick” is to make your body a single contiguous piece and then simply resist falling forward with your fingers. The bracing is similar to that of a heavy lift. I exhale and try to push out against my lower obliques as if I’m wearing a weight belt which, for me is the point of all this midsection work.

The other caveat is that while inverted, your shoulder girdle becomes your “hips.” In other words, while your triceps and delts are working in a quasi-isometric manner with arms locked and GH joint active, your traps, rear delts and mid-back are like the hips and glutes pulling “up and in,” so to speak, to leverage it all together.

I like doing an inverted mobility flow of sorts I learned from Capoeira years ago. I “enter the ground,” then transition from the “Hollow Back” position, to a straddle split to straight leg and then “dismount.”

It’s a lot of fun. I’ll be 46 in a few weeks and it’s great to be able to still use my body like an action figure and just play like a kid sometimes, especially after getting blown up over a decade ago. It’s part of how I demonstrate gratitude and celebrate living 😁
