There is more to self defense and street fighting than throwing a good punch. Ask any experienced fighter and they will tell you managing or understanding distance and footwork are core principles you must master. Your feet are your base and the place where your power comes from. Your feet also control the distance in a fight. Bad footwork can cause you to lose power, lose your balance, or worst of all stumble and fall to the ground. The simple drill in this self defense lesson forces you to move in and out quickly in a coordinated manner.

If you want to come out on top in a self defense situation you must be able to move in quickly to strike, and also move back quickly to protect yourself. The other fighting principle it forces you to learn is retracting your kicks quickly. Leaving a foot hanging there opens you up to some really bad counter attacks including your attacker simply grabbing a hold of your foot or leg and driving you to the ground. That's not where you want to be in a street fight. Do yourself a favor and incorporate this in and out drill into your self defense training.
