Growth fundamentals: More Protein AND Carbs

So on Tik Tok, a young lifter asked me in response to my previous video on training splits, if his 6x day/week schedule was “optimal” provided he meets his protein requirements. You can see my specific answer in that video’s comments but I thanked him for reminding me to talk about how, after a point, you can’t just add more protein and you need more carbs because there’s actually a couple different things going on during the muscle building process.

Simply put, there’s 2 main switches or levers to pull post-training. There’s the anti-catabolic, rest, restore energy balance, return to normalcy system, and then the anabolic or build NEW tissues, NEW structures system. These are interconnected but have some key distinctions.

Anti-catabolism is automatic. As in, it’s necessary for survival so it’s going to happen if you want it to or not. You can’t pull the anabolic lever first. What this means is that while you need the materials to build the new structures, and you have to flip the switch on the conveyor belt, that factory needs power first and carbs are the substrate that come ready-made to suit that purpose.

If you want to do EXTRA functions with an organism, satisfy the survival demands first. It’s that simple.
