Different Drum (Stone Poneys, 1967-1968). Live cover performance by Bill Sharkey, Home Studio, Hawaii Kai, HI. 2024-01-29. "Keeping the Oldies & Classics Alive"

"Different Drum," written by Mike Nesmith, was Stone Poneys' (feat. Linda Ronstadt) only top 40 release hitting the no. 13 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1967-1968 (Whitburn, 2013). A slower folk version of the song was fist recorded by the Greenbriar Boys in 1966 and found on their 4th album "Better Late Than Never" (discogs, 2024). The song was originally meant for a male singer; however, Ronstadt changed the sex of the two individuals in the song, but she kept the line "I ain't sayin' you ain't pretty" as originally composed by Nesmith (songfacts, 2024). "In 1998, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, which honors recordings that have 'qualitative or historical significance' (M. Mullins, oldtimemusic, Oct. 12, 2023).

Lyrics:

You and I travel to the beat of a diff'rent drum.
Oh, can't you tell by the way I run
Every time you make eyes at me. Wo oh.
You cry and you moan and say it will work out.
But honey child I've got my doubts.
You can't see the forest for the trees.

Oh, don't get me wrong. It's not that I'm knockin'.
It's just that I'm not in the market
For a girl who wants to love only me.
Yes, and I ain't sayin' you ain't pretty.
All I'm sayin's I'm not ready for any person,
Place or thing to try and pull the reins in on me.
So Goodbye, I'll be leavin'.
I see no sense in the cryin' and grievin'.
We'll both live a lot longer if you live without me.
