Foundational Knowledge: Macros

Before we can start constructing good “meals” much less entire diet plans, let’s first go over what macros are, what they do and how many calories we get from each.

Protein: Made of Amino Acids, used for construction, repair and a variety of other processes. 4Kcal Per Gram

Carbohydrates: Made of various Sugars, Fibers and Starches, primarily function as readily available energy. 4Kcal Per Gram

Fats: Made of Triglycerides (technically any ester of fatty acids) primarily used for energy storage but also things like cell membranes and hormone production. 9Kcal Per Gram. Yes, NINE or 2.25 more than Protein & Carbs.

Alcohol: This one is a bit more complicated and involves some chemistry but it’s a Hydroxl (-OH) group attached to some kind of saturated Carbon. The -OH makes a lot of various reactions possible. In nature and for this discussion we see this in fermented substances most commonly. 7Kcal Per Gram.
