FAQ: White or Brown Rice? Which is “better?”

I get this one a lot so I’ll address it quickly and simply here.

First off, I urge you to reframe your thinking from “best,” “worst,” “good for you,” “bad for you,” and think instead of things as “better use cases for a given desired outcome.”

In terms of rice, specific to the topic of fitness, of body composition, they are essentially all but identical. If it’s ACTUAL brown rice and not just dyed, there’s a slight difference in fiber content among other things that, extrapolated out in months and years MAY have some marginal effect one way or the other. That said, in terms of Xs and Os, they’re essentially the same

Depending on the individual, white rice may be hyper-palatable and you can find yourself eating way more of it, calories equated than you would if you had brown rice instead. This is why I tend to avoid things like breads and cereals. It’s not that they’re “bad” or can’t fit in a responsible, healthy meal plan. It’s just for me, and many others, it’s just too easy to eat a lot of it at once.

Again, like I say often, it’s not just the plan on paper. You have to also consider the psychological impact of certain meals, and certain components of those meals, ESPECIALLY the carbs.

This is largely an individual, nuanced thing so you need to be honest with yourself and your coach if you have one and decide to not eat things you find hard to meter out without difficulty.

So, all that to say, the answer to, “white or brown rice?” Is simply, which one can you eat sustainably to suit your goals? If you can meter out white rice and not eat a plateful with every meal, it’s probably fine. If you find yourself going overboard then switch to brown. It’s really that simple 🤷🏿♂️
