This is a simple story but one with a punch.

111.TV.198 -- This episode of The Big Picture focuses on how the U.S. Army educated soldiers and their children during deployments. The episode is broken in half focusing first on Information and Education (I&E). The episode includes several ways in which soldiers remained informed and entertained through outlets such as the Armed Forces Radio, Stars and Stripes, and the American Forces Network. Next, the audience learns how the United States Armed Forces Institute (USAFI) educated soldiers, even those at the front. The second half of the film delves into the school life of the children of Army soldiers stationed in Germany and Japan. The Big Picture makes the argument that the students have many of the same experiences as they would in the U.S., including homework, sports, field trips, dances, and graduation ceremonies with the added benefit of being able to experience a new culture.

111.TV.196 -- In “A Day in Korea,” an early episode of The Big Picture, Captain Carl Zimmermann gives audiences a better idea of what the war was like in Korea, not through diagrams or logistics, but by simulating a typical day in combat for the US soldier. This episode chronologically describes the routine of servicemen, from morning to night. It gives details on how basic necessities were delivered, like food, mail, and coffee, and how nothing, even showers, were taken for granted. Audiences also learn about specific tasks the Army completed frequently, such as locating and eliminating enemy artillery with the help of recording devices, and transporting supplies up a mountain. This episode gives viewers an idea of what thoughts were running through a soldier’s head as he interacted with his peers, waits on the front lines as the day passes into night, and even as he is being taken for medical care after being wounded. The importance of this The Big Picture episode is that it emphasizes the individual. Instead of examining the war from a strategic perspective, this episode makes clear that the most important aspect of war is the soldier, the one who gives up their normal life, and persists in the fight no matter the cost.

On this episode of The Big Picture, titled “Citizen, Soldier and Taxpayer, Too,” audiences learn about the U.S. Army’s “war against waste.” Secretary of the Army Frank Pace Jr. begins by emphasizing the challenges associated with efficiently maintaining a massive and global fighting force. Next, viewers learn about Operation Roll-Up, during which WWII scrap weapons from across the Pacific were salvaged and repurposed for employment in the Korean conflict. This episode also showcases the role of equipment conservation teams on battlefields in Korea, the careful storage of military vehicles in climate-controlled storage facilities, and the Army’s recycling of canteens, clothing, and much more. Finally, Secretary Pace returns to outline just how many dollars the U.S. Army saves via rehabilitation of old equipment in the quest to conserve.

This episode of The Big Picture, titled “The Eyes and Ears of the Army,” examines the U.S. Army’s nerve center of communication: The Signal Corps. Even in the 1950s, the Signal Corps developed and utilized the most advanced communication technology in order to influence and monitor the “modern battlefield.”

This episode of The Big Picture, titled “The Army Medical Corps,” showcases the medical treatment of U.S. soldiers in the early 1950s. This episode discusses the improved survival success rate in the Korean conflict, due in part because of new medical research and techniques. The Big Picture also introduces Lieutenant Colonel S.J. Newson, a surgeon with the Army’s 7th Division in Korea. During his interview, Newson discusses the hardships of saving lives on the battlefield. Viruses and disease were additional medical challenges for the Army in Korea. To combat this, the Medical Corps immunized soldiers from diseases, used antibiotics to treat and kill bacteria, as well as promoted health standards for the food and water available in theater.

Footage from the fight for Hill 1179 is also featured, as is the harrowing story of displaced families attempting to return to their homes in Seoul. CPT Carl Zimmermann, the show’s host, interviews two of The Big Picture’s camera operators before signing off for what he believed was the show’s finale.

111.TV.180 - This episode of The Big Picture, titled “The Korean Ceasefire Talks Begin,” focuses on developments regarding the Korean conflict between 20 June and 20 July 1951. The program follows truce negotiations in Kaesong, where UN representatives grapple with the presence of armed communist soldiers outside of diplomatic conference meetings, as well as severe restrictions on UN-associated press coverage. Eventually, the borders of a disarmed “neutral” zone are agreed upon around Kaesong, and UN correspondents are allowed to fully cover the negotiations. Additionally, in this episode, Captain Carl Zimmermann interviews Sergeant Jim Heidenreith, who discusses the role of combat engineers in Korea, and Lieutenant Robert Fallon, who delivers a speech on the importance, hardships, and humanity of the U.S. infantryman.

Additionally, Captain Carl Zimmerman interviews Chaplain Joseph Murphy and Captain John Rock, a former company commander with the 1st Cavalry Division. Chaplain Murphy talks about his experiences and responsibilities overseas, tending to the religious needs of the soldiers and holding mass under fire. The episode also highlights the firsthand accounts of Captain Molly Younger, a member of the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH), and Sergeant Mike Preputnick, a combat medic. Both of their stories recount the importance and success of quick medical treatment of troops. The episode does not shy away from showing the numerous medical challenges faced by UN forces in the Korean theater.

111.TV.177 – This episode of the U.S. Army-produced program “The Big Picture” follows activities conducted by U.S. and ROK forces probing north of Korea’s 38th parallel. Covering 20 March to 20 April 1951, the film first details “Operation Tomahawk,” which saw thousands of parachutists from the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team drop behind enemy lines near Monsan. Also depicted are the 1st ROK Division’s crossing of the Imjin River under U.S. artillery support, tactical napalm strikes clearing the way for advancing U.S. infantry, as well as the reconnaissance activities of tank-infantry teams passing beyond the 38th parallel. This episode additionally highlights General Eisenhower’s formal activation of the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) and the subsequent building of its facilities in France.

The film focuses on the 8th Army’s offensive in February-March 1951 that eventually led to the 25th Infantry Division’s crossing of the Han River. The film highlights the United Nation push north toward the 38th Parallel in the early months of 1951. 1111.TV.174 - As the sixth installment of the long-running Army production The Big Picture, “United Nations Consolidate Below the 38th Parallel” outlines large-scale military activity across the Korean peninsula from December 1950 through January 1951. The episode highlights the preparation and destruction of critical infrastructure as US and UN forces withdraw back to the 38th Parallel.

As the first installment of the long-running Army production The Big Picture, “The First Forty Days in Korea” follows several companies of the 24th Infantry Division during America’s entry into the war. Unlike later episodes of The Big Picture which offer interviews with subject matter experts, “The First Forty Days in Korea” is almost exclusively narrated combat footage recorded and produced by the Army Signal Corps.

As the third installment of the long-running Army production The Big Picture, “The United Nations Offensive” highlights the successful U.N. advance north of the 38th Parallel from 20 September to 20 October 1950. This episode highlights the liberation of the South Korean capital, Seoul, and the stunning capture of the North Korean capital, Pyongyang.

As the fourth installment of the long-running Army production The Big Picture, “Chinese Reds Enter the Korean War” outlines the UN struggle against a new enemy and the brutal cold. After looking at the situation in Korea from 20 October through 20 November 1950, the episode describes the evacuation process for the wounded from the front to hospitals. The film also showcases the production of new weaponry at Aberdeen Proving Ground, the Navy’s fight against winter storms in the Sea of Japan, the Air Force’s pack plane, and the latest in winter uniforms.
