Dirga Pranayama (Three Part Breath), technically a part of yogic breathing is fundamental to both the physical as well as the mental practice of yoga. Under this section of breathing, both inhalation and exhalation happen in three layers in a smooth unobstructed way. It involves the use of the abdominal muscles, rib cage, and chest while engaging the diaphragm muscles.

This technique of breathing helps us connect to our bodies, slowly progressing with full awareness.

Since one of the main benefits of practicing this kind of breathing is to decrease stress levels, thereby calming the sympathetic nervous system, it is a great way to reduce feelings of anxiety or panic attacks.

If practiced regularly, if allows us to go deeper into the other aspects of breath work at advanced levels that form part of a yoga practice.
