Atkin OM37 Aged

Atkin guitars are based Canterbury and founded in 1995 by Alister Atkin.

This is an OM style model based on a Martin and shares a scale length with the dreadnoughts but has a shallower body shape with a tighter waist.

It's aged, so there is a nice but subtle cracking of the nitrocellulose finish on the torrified Sitka spruce top. Torrification is the baking of the wood to replicate the sound of an old guitar by changing the chemical constituency of the wood. I've never played an old Martin so I will believe the hype for the time being.

The back and sides are east Indian rosewood and are aged too and a really nice finish. All the specs are that of an old Martin guitar of the 1930's but it has a 2 way truss rod which is a massive improvement. I phoned Alister Atkin to ask about how to adjust it and it's a major plus that you can actually phone up the owner and founder of the company directly. I'm not sure you can do that with Chris Martin (or Thomas Ripsam now since 2021)

It's a full sounding resonant guitar with a beautiful resonance. Less 'big' than a dreadnought and with a slight midrange focus, it sounds good playing anything and there is no less bass response compared to a dreadnought. The Atkin has a sparkle on the very high end that is fantastic!
