On the evening of May 30, 2022, Matthew Todhunter, age 33, was dropping off his son at his wife’s house in the Mill Valley neighborhood, just north of Marysville, Ohio. There, he got into a domestic dispute with his wife and pulled out a gun, which later turned out to be a BB gun that looked like a Glock-style handgun. He pointed the gun at his wife and other people in the house, including children, and told his son that, quote “this is the night Daddy is going to die”. He also said he was drunk and wanted to die.

Several 9 1 1 calls were made from the house, alerting the authorities about the situation. The first person to arrive at the scene was Deputy Jacob Matejko of the Union County Sheriff’s Office. Matejko spotted Matthew sitting in a white truck with tinted windows outside the house. He ordered him to put his hands up and get out of the car multiple times. Matthew finally complied, but then pointed the gun at Matejko. Within one second, Matejko fired at least five shots at Matthew, hitting him in the chest. Matthew fell to the ground and according to official reports was pronounced dead at a local hospital although it's clear from the video that he died on the scene pretty much immediately.

After the shooting, one of the women who was with Matthew Todhunter yelled at Matejko that it was a BB gun. However, Mateyko had no way of knowing that at the time, as the gun looked very realistic. The dashcam and bodycam footage of the incident confirmed that Matejko acted in self-defense and followed proper protocol. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation also ruled that Matthew Todhunter was suicidal and that his death was caused by quote “law enforcement forced action”.

Matts brother, who is a police officer, said that Matthew had a long history of drug and alcohol-related criminal charges. Matts brother also said our thoughts should be with the police and E M S that were at the scene and not just his brother.

During my research i was able to locate Matts obituary. Matthew Todhunter's obituary reads as follows.

Matthew Ryan Todhunter, age 33, of Marysville, went to be with Jesus, Monday, May 30th, 2022. A diesel mechanic, he was an associate of Virginia Transport and a former associate of Kirk National Lease. A 2007 graduate of Marysville High School, he received a diesel mechanic certification from T D D S Technical Institute. Among his many talents with mechanics, he helped Leesburg Township Fire Department with truck maintenance. He was a skilled baseball player and youth baseball coach, was a fan of the Boston Red Sox and Pittsburgh Steelers (just like his father) and liked playing all sports. Deeply patriotic, he also enjoyed all kinds of music, especially country. With his own special relationship with God, Matt was known to help out any stranger. Above all, he was a beloved father, husband, son, brother and uncle. He was known as a great “hands-on” dad. He adored his son and was his son’s hero. His son inherited his daddy’s beautiful brown eyes and gorgeous long eyelashes. Matt’s smile would light up a room. He always made activities with loved ones and friends more fun and exciting. He was born July 16th, 1988 in Marysville and was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his wife, his son, his mother, his step-mother, his siblings, his brother-in-law, his mother-and-father-in-law, and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends that loved him.
