Live from Khartoum in Sudan

According to the Doctors' Syndicate, the number of civilian casualties has risen to 243 since the start of the latest conflict, with 1,335 injured. Due to the fighting, 55 hospitals are said to be inoperable.

A power struggle between the army, led by Sudan's de facto ruler General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of deputy leader General 'Hemedti' Mohamed Hamdan Dagolo has been ongoing in recent years.

A military council has run the country since a coup in 2021, although tensions have risen between the two leaders over the country's direction, the integration of the RSF into the army, and the planned transition to civilian rule.

The council of generals took over from a joint military-civilian government, which ousted President Omar al-Bashir in 2019.
