Elder Paul V. Johnson was called as a member of the Fifth Quorum of the Seventy and an Area Authority Seventy in June 2003 and then was called to serve as a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy in April 2005. He was named a member of the Presidency of the Seventy in August 2021.

For nine years Elder Johnson served as commissioner of the Church Educational System of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Previous to his assignment as commissioner, he served in the Chile and Europe area presidencies.

Elder Johnson has served in a number of other callings through the years, including stake president’s counselor, high councilor, bishop, elders quorum president, and Young Men president. He served as a full-time missionary in the Norway Oslo Mission. Following his mission, he taught Norwegian at the Language Training Mission at Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho.

While attending BYU, Elder Johnson received a bachelor of arts degree in 1977, a bachelor of science degree in zoology in 1978, and a master of education degree in counseling and guidance in 1982. He went on to receive a doctorate in instructional technology in 1989 from Utah State University.

Elder Johnson married Jill Washburn in August 1976. They are the parents of nine children.
