In the Book of Mormon, a prophet named Samuel taught people about Jesus. He said a bright star would shine when Jesus was born. Some people believed the prophet and watched for the star. One night, the new star appeared! It was a sign that Jesus had been born in a land far away. Years went by. One day the whole earth seemed sad. There were earthquakes and storms. It was a sign that Jesus had died. The land stayed dark for three days. Then something wonderful happened. Jesus came to visit the Nephites and Lamanites! You Are a Child of God One of the great truths in the Bible is that we are all the “offspring of God” (Acts 17:29), created in His image. As a child of God, you have infinite potential and worth. Before your life here on earth, you lived with God, and He sent you here to learn and grow to become more like Him. God Knows You Personally Jesus Christ taught that God, our Father in Heaven, is aware each time a sparrow falls to the ground and that we are “of more value than many sparrows” to Him (see Matthew 10:29–31). Through every difficulty you face, you are never alone. God is watching over you. He knows you perfectly and knows what you need to help you overcome your challenges. God Is Your Heavenly Father God loves you and wants you to succeed. Like all loving fathers, He wants to hear from you and is eager to give you guidance if you are willing to talk with Him through prayer. Prayer Is a Conversation True prayer is more than just a ritual or way to place an order for something you want. Instead, prayer is a conversation between you and your Father in Heaven. You can talk to God about the things you’re grateful for, your hopes and dreams, your worries, and the things you want or need. God Hears and Answers Our Prayers God hears and answers our prayers. Your answer may not come in the way you expect, and it may not always be the answer you were hoping for. But if we are open to receive, it will come. You might recognize your answer in thoughts and feelings, in the actions of someone around you, or through a scripture you read. "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God." - Romans 8:16 You Can Feel God’s Love Your Father in Heaven is always aware of you and your needs. If you struggle with doubts or feeling disconnected from God, you can learn to better recognize His presence in your life by trying these things: Take some time out of your day each day to put away all distractions and focus on God. Pray regularly to feel God’s love in your life. Read God’s word in the scriptures and other messages about His love. Keep a journal where you can write about blessings God has given you and spiritual impressions you’ve felt. Talk with trusted friends and family about how they have felt God’s love in their life. Practice Christlike love for others through service and forgiveness. Strengthen Your Faith in God Faith can help you find peace and strength through difficult times. Russell M. Nelson was sustained and set apart as the 17th president and prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Sunday, January 14, 2018, in the upper room of the Salt Lake Temple. Personal Life Born September 9, 1924, President Nelson is the son of Marion C. and Edna Anderson Nelson. He and his wife, the former Dantzel White, have ten children. Sister Nelson passed away in February 2005. In April 2006, he married Wendy L. Watson. Professional Life Prior to his service as head of the Church, President Nelson served as president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles from July 15, 2015, until his call as the Church’s leader. He has served as a member of that quorum since April 7, 1984. An internationally renowned surgeon and medical researcher, Dr. Nelson received his B.A. and M.D. degrees from the University of Utah (1945, 47). Honorary scholastic societies include Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha. He served his residency in surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and at the University of Minnesota, where he was awarded his Ph.D. Degree in 1954. He also received honorary degrees of Doctor of Science from Brigham Young University in 1970, Doctor of Medical Science from Utah State University in 1989, and Doctor of Humane Letters from Snow College in 1994. His professional work included the positions of research professor of surgery and director of the Thoracic Surgery Residency at the University of Utah and chairman of the Division of Thoracic Surgery at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City. Author of numerous publications and chapters in medical textbooks, President Nelson lectured and visited professionally throughout the United States and in many other nations prior to his call as a General Authority. A host of awards and honors have come to him, including the Distinguished Alumni Award, University of Utah; the Heart of Gold Award from the American Heart Association; a citation for International Service from the American Heart Association; and the Golden Plate Award, presented by the American Academy of Achievement. He has been awarded honorary professorships from three universities in the People’s Republic of China. Dr. Nelson has served as president of the Society for Vascular Surgery, a director of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, chairman of the Council on Cardiovascular Surgery for the American Heart Association, and president of the Utah State Medical Association. He is listed in Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in America, and Who’s Who in Religion. President Nelson has held numerous positions of responsibility in the Church. He served as stake president of the Bonneville Stake from 1964 to June, 1971, when he was called as general president of the Sunday School. Prior to his call to the Quorum of the Twelve, he was serving as a Regional Representative assigned to the Kearns Utah Region. He had previously served as Regional Representative for Brigham Young University. As part of the Salt Lake Temple renovation project, the Church Office Building and Main Street plazas had their landscaping, planters and walkways cleared to the concrete decking (a parking garage is underneath). Samuel was a prophet. He climbed onto a city wall to preach. He told the people they needed to repent and have faith in Jesus Christ. Samuel taught that Jesus would soon be born. A new star would shine. The sky would stay bright the whole night! He taught that when Jesus died, it would be dark for three days. Many cities would be destroyed. Some people believed and were baptized. Others did not believe and were angry. They threw rocks and shot arrows at Samuel. But God protected him, and he wasn’t hurt.
